in industry and government to profit from the advanced use of technology. Computers, gadgets, mobile phones associate themselves and their owners with a huge amount of data. All this has led to the formation of new values created or transmitted in cyberspace. Today there is a threat of theft of these values, their damage or substitution.

An IT company in Germany with thousands of clients has become a victim of the Kaseya software hack, according to the Federal Office for Information Technology Security
A cyberattack on software maker Kaseya, whose software was used by the large Swedish supermarket chain Coop Sweden, as well as many small and medium-sized businesses around the world, could affect thousands of computers in Germany. This assessment was expressed on Sunday, July 4, by experts from the Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI).
BSI expects that on Monday, July 5, they may begin to receive messages from companies affected by the cyber attack, which did not notice the breach of their systems until the beginning of the work week. The fact is that only enterprises operating in critical industries for the country's infrastructure, such as power supply, are legally required to report hacker attacks against them.
As a result of this hacker attack on the Kaseya company, 200 firms in the United States were affected.

Here’s How Much Your Personal Information Is Worth To Cybercriminals – And What They Do With It

It’s (Mostly) About The Money
Though data breaches can be a national security threat, 86% are about money, and 55% are committed by organized criminal groups, according to Verizon’s annual data breach report. Stolen data often ends up being sold online on the dark web. For example, in 2018 hackers offered for sale more than 200 million records containing the personal information of Chinese individuals. This included information on 130 million customers of the Chinese hotel chain Huazhu Hotels Group.
Similarly, data stolen from Target, Sally Beauty, P.F. Chang, Harbor Freight and Home Depot turned up on a known online black-market site called Rescator. While it is easy to find marketplaces such as Rescator through a simple Google search, other marketplaces on the dark web can be found only by using special web browsers.
Buyers can purchase the data they are interested in. The most common way to pay for the transaction is with bitcoins or via Western Union. The prices depend on the type of data, its demand and its supply. For example, a big surplus of stolen personally identifiable information caused its price to drop from US$4 for information about a person in 2014 to $1 in 2015. Email dumps containing anywhere from a hundred thousand to a couple of million email addresses go for $10, and voter databases from various states sell for $100.

Where Stolen Data Goes
Buyers use stolen data in several ways. Credit card numbers and security codes can be used to create clone cards for making fraudulent transactions. Social Security numbers, home addresses, full names, dates of birth and other personally identifiable information can be used in identity theft. For example, the buyer can apply for loans or credit cards under the victim’s name and file fraudulent tax returns.
Sometimes stolen personal information is purchased by marketing firms or companies that specialize in spam campaigns. Buyers can also use stolen emails in phishing and other social engineering attacks and to distribute malware.
Hackers have targeted personal information and financial data for a long time because they are easy to sell. Health care data has become a big attraction for data thieves in recent years. In some cases the motivation is extortion.
A good example is the theft of patient data from the Finnish psychotherapy practice firm Vastaamo. The hackers used the information they stole to demand a ransom from not only Vastaamo, but also from its patients. They emailed patients with the threat to expose their mental health records unless the victims paid a ransom of 200 euros in bitcoins. At least 300 of these stolen records have been posted online, according to an Associated Press report.

Stolen data including medical diplomas, medical licenses and insurance documents can also be used to forge a medical background.

How To Know And What To Do
What can you do to minimize your risk from stolen data? It is a good idea to subscribe to identity theft protection services.

If you already have become the victim of a data breach, you can take these steps to minimize the impact: Inform credit reporting agencies and other organizations that collect data about you, such as your health care provider, insurance company, banks and credit card companies, and change the passwords for your accounts. You can also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission to get a tailored plan to recover from the incident.

Ontario is currently under another 28-day lockdown. Petition starter Lindsay, a small business owner, believes that the province is closing businesses that aren’t responsible for transmissions, while malls and big-box stores continue to operate with minimal supervision. Lindsay says: “We cannot continue with these closures. Our businesses will not survive.” This petition is calling on the province to end the lockdown of small businesses before even more are forced to permanently close their doors. You can help by adding your signature.

Ontario is currently facing another 28 day lockdown. While big box stores and internationally owned retailers continue to thrive under the provincial regulations, Ontario small businesses are being the target of yet another attack on our livelihoods.

When asked to comply during the first two lockdowns, we all did our part. We want to end the pandemic and resume regular life as soon as possible, and believed our provincial leaders had this goal in mind as well. This most recent shutdown is not a provincial lockdown. With packed malls, in-person schooling, and big box stores running with minimal regulations we cannot be asked to martyr ourselves in the name of lowering transmission.

The provincial government is closing businesses that are not responsible for transmission.

There are over 440,000 small businesses in Ontario. We have the largest number of small businesses of any other Canadian province, yet we are the only province to continually implement wide spread lockdowns of these companies.

We are restaurant owners, personal care businesses, health and fitness professionals, event professionals, creatives & artists and much more. We have the safest protocols in place across this province. We are educated in sanitation, we can provide safe and socially distanced environments, and we genuinely care about our employees and customers.

The Ford Government has made it clear that Ontario Small Businesses are not a priority.

Less than a week ago Doug Ford told restaurants they would be allowed to operate outdoor dining even in grey zones; this caused restaurant owners to spend thousands of dollars on these spaces only to find out that this would not be the case in this current closure. This level of carelessness and lack of foresight could be the demise of many locally owned restaurants.

We cannot continue with these closures. Our businesses will not survive. The strain these closures are having on our physical and mental health is being overlooked by many in our province; we cannot stand by and watch our communities be decimated by this lockdown.

This targeted closure of Ontario Small Businesses is inequitable and must end. Please sign and share this petition.
