A Celebration of Community: Canada Day at Janet Magee Manor.

On the afternoon of June 26, our WSC volunteer team helped with hosting the Canada Day celebration at Janet Magee Manor. We were made to feel so welcome by Kiara and the other senior volunteers. They had already set up the backyard patio for the summer afternoon BBQ.

As soon as the food arrived, we lent a hand to ensure everything was organized and placed perfectly. There was a fantastic turnout, with nearly 55 seniors joining us in the backyard.

We served the food, poured drinks, and checked in constantly to see if anyone needed assistance. The best part was spending quality time with the tenants, listening to their stories, and gathering interesting memories.

The atmosphere was incredible vibrant. Summer music drifted through the air, and some of the tenants got up to dance. As someone who loves photography, I was thrilled to capture many special moments. I also got to meet one of the tenants, John, a talented professional photographer, who was also taking pictures at the event. It was wonderful to learn about his experiences as a wildlife photographer.

There was a table in the corner where one of the tenants, Linda, was displaying her intricate handmade jewelry featuring beadwork. In a deeply kind gesture, she gifted every single volunteer a beautiful handmade bracelet—a keepsake we will all cherish.

As the event wound down, our volunteer team reset the chairs and tables and cleaned up. When we went to say goodbye, the seniors showered us with blessings just for being there to support them. It was incredibly moving. I am happy and grateful to have been a part of creating such a joyful day for the seniors at Janet Magee Manor.

(The WSC initiative to promote volunteerism among seniors and other generations is sponsored by New Horizons for Seniors Program.)
