This is an Model 3191C Cassette Player/Tape Recorder from the 1980s, brought in for . Known for their exceptional quality, durability, and compact design, these players were perfect for classrooms - and it did seem like every classroom in the 1980s had one. Not only does it still work but the sound quality is pretty impressive, time to dig out the old tape collection!

We’ve had our fair share of old items come in for but at 70 years this may be the oldest! This is a Model 725 radio, manufactured in Canada in 1954. Featuring both medium and shortwave bands and good old fashioned vacuum tube technology (6 tubes), this beauty is a reminder of the days when the radio was the focal point of the living room. We haven’t been able to bring it back to life yet, but a little elbow grease and some helpful schematics may just do the trick!

Another classic laptop brought in for , this time it’s a T4800CT from 1995. Featuring an IntelDX4 75MHz processor, 8MB RAM, and a 500MB HDD, it had pretty good specs for the time and originally sold for $4-5,000 CAD (roughly $8-9,000 today). We really wanted to try out the detachable but unfortunately we haven’t been able to get the laptop to boot up…yet.

Here we have a DynaTac 8000M mobile phone, introduced in 1989 and brought in this week for . And as much as everyone wanted to own one of these back in the day it did have plenty of drawbacks like being prohibitively expensive, having a 60 minute battery life, and taking up to 10 hours to recharge that battery. And it was nicknamed The Brick Phone for a reason as it weighs 2.2lbs and (including antenna) is over 1 foot in length!

When this 19BII calculator was dropped off for the owner mentioned that they spent $250 for this when it came out in 1990, which is roughly $500 in 2024 dollars. That may seem insanely expensive for a calculator but in 1990 this was the price you had to pay if you wanted some portable computing power and didn’t want to shell out thousands for a laptop. Plus it could be used (or so we heard) to help cheat on tests, making it well worth the price for scholastically disinclined students!

This is a blast from the past - October 1992 to be exact - version 3.0! Headquartered in Ottawa, Corel (now doing business as Alludo) had a great deal of success during the tech boom of the 90s and at one point was the biggest software company in Canada. A large part of this success was due to the popularity of the CorelDRAW software, and apparently the popularity has endured as they are still releasing new versions as of 2023!

Here we have the U-Matic BVU-110 Portable Videocassette Recorder, released in the early 80s/late 70s. The 3/4” U-Matic format was released by Sony in 1971 and was one of the first video formats to contain the videotape inside a cassette. Originally intended for (and rejected by) the consumer market, the U-Matic format found much greater success in the television broadcast industry due to its compactness, reliability, and low cost.

This is the Macintosh SE, first introduced in March 1987. The SE (short for System Expansion) featured an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 CPU, 1 MB RAM and was the first “Compact Macintosh“ with an expansion slot and an internal drive bay for a hard disk. This particular model did indeed come with an internal 20MB SCSI drive, but the increased storage did not come cheaply as this originally retailed for $3,900 USD, equivalent to over $10,000 in 2023. Ouch!

Here we have a TC-560 reel-to-reel tape recorder, first introduced in 1968 with a retail price of $399.50 USD (roughly $3,500 today). Not only was this a 4-track, 3-speed auto reverse tape recorder, it was also designed to be used as a stereo system with a built-in pre-amp control panel and 20-watt RMS power amplifier. All we need now are some tape reels and we can party like it’s 1968!

Here’s an ThinkPad Model 510Cs, first released in June 1994. This belonged to the 500 series, the first line of subnotebooks released by IBM. Featuring a 50 MHz 486 CPU, 4MB RAM, and a 200MB HDD, this had decent specs for being such a compact (10” x 7” x 2”) machine, but the tiny 7.7” display must have been tough on the eyes…anyone have a magnifying glass?

Another first for us, an oscilloscope brought in for , a Heathkit Model IO-4540 oscilloscope from 1975. The company initially produced DIY aircraft kits but after WW2 they transitioned to electronic kits, allowing electronics enthusiasts to build their own radios, TVs, PCs, and apparently oscilloscopes as well. Heathkit closed their doors in the early 1990s but are still fondly remembered for their kits and for educating and inspiring generations of engineers and innovators.
