What do you do when a fatal, drug-resistant outbreak sweeps through your ICU, but every single medical device, syringe, and air vent tests 100% sterile?

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, prestigious hospitals globally faced mysterious, recurring outbreaks of highly resistant bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and KPC. The mystery baffled epidemiology teams - until they looked inside the brand-new, eco-friendly electronic sensor sinks.

Think your toilet is just for business? It’s actually a high-speed aerosol launchpad. Fluid dynamics research reveals that a lidless flush blasts microscopic bioaerosols into the air at speeds exceeding 2 m/s (Crimaldi et al., 2022). While larger droplets quickly settle onto surrounding surfaces, smaller particles remain suspended in the air for hours (Barker & Jones, 2005).

How Do These Germs Spread? Flushing an open toilet launches invisible waste germs into the air, spreading them across the bathroom (Abney et al., 2021).

E. coli & Salmonella: These enteric bacteria can aggressively persist on dried bathroom surfaces like toilet seats for 8 to 9 days (Barker & Jones, 2005; Barker & Bloomfield, 2000).

The Defense Against These Pathogens: Because bioaerosols contaminate high-touch surfaces, closing the toilet lid along with proper hand hygiene is non-negotiable.

Soap chemically dismantles the protective outer structures of viruses and bacteria and the friction of washing your hands lifts the remaining organisms from your skin so water can safely rinse them away.
