In 1999-2000, Suzana Neves founded Women In Computer Science to help eliminate barriers between women and the technology field. Since then, WiCS has been run by undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty within the School of Computer Science to provide extra support and encouragement to the women in the program. We create opportunities for women in Computer Science, allowing them to suc

ceed in their studies and have successful careers in the Computer Science field. The membership is free and the benefits are priceless! Just send an email to [email protected] and take advantage of opportunities offered throughout the year.

🔨Built-in Function of the Day: C strcat() 🔨

The strcat() function concatenates the destination string and the source string, and the result is stored in the destination string. It is defined in the string.h header file.

📰 Tech News: New Haptic Device Communicates Emotion with Nearly 80% Accuracy of Human Touch 📰

With the spread of the omicron variant, not everyone can or is eager to travel for the winter break. But what if virtual touch could bring you assurance that you were not alone?

At the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, computer scientist and roboticist Heather Culbertson has been exploring various methods to simulate touch. As part of a new study, Culbertson a senior author on this study, along with researchers at Stanford, her alma mater, wanted to see if two companions (platonic or romantic), could communicate and express care and emotion remotely.

💼 Success Story: Tu Youyou 💼

Tu Youyou is a pharmaceutical chemist whose research has saved millions of lives. After years of studying medicinal plants and ancient texts on traditional Chinese treatments, Youyou and her team discovered artemisinin, a compound that is presently the first line of defense against malaria. In 2015, she and two colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, making her the first Chinese woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the first Chinese Nobel laureate of this category.

📰 Tech News: Teaching AI to See Depth in Photographs and Paintings 📰

Researchers in SFU's Computational Photography Lab hope to give computers a visual advantage that we humans take for granted—the ability to see depth in photographs. While humans naturally can determine how close or far objects are from a single point of view, like a photograph or a painting, it's a challenge for computers—but one they may soon overcome. Researchers recently published their work improving a process called monocular depth estimation, a technique that teaches computers how to see depth using machine learning.

🔨 Built-in Function of the Day: Java's compareTo() 🔨

The compareTo() method compares two strings alphabetically. It returns
- 0 if the string is equal to the other string,
- a negative number if the string is less than the other string,
- or a positive number if the string is greater than the other string

Syntax: public int compareTo(String anotherString)

Example:
String myStr1 = “A”;
String myStr2 = “B”;
System.out.println(myStr1.compareTo(myStr2));

Output:
-1 // because A is less than B lexicographically

💼 Success Story: Achia Khaleda Nila 💼

Achia Khaleda Nila is a computer engineer and has worked in the IT industry for more than 15 years. While working as a junior software engineer she came across very few female peers and was frequently the only girl in a classroom. In 2013, Nila founded Women in Digital, a social enterprise that is designed to showcase the work of female creators and increase female visibility on digital platforms. Her organization has trained over 10,000 women in Bangladesh.
