Well, I finally got myself in front of the camera for a change! 📸

As a graphic designer, I'm usually the one behind the scenes, helping other businesses put their best foot forward. So I figured it was about time I took a little of my own advice!

With some exciting changes happening at Grace By Design, I recently had some professional photos taken, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share a few favourites and reintroduce myself to some of the newer faces around here.

I'm Grace, the owner and graphic designer behind Grace By Design. I've been working in the design industry for over 20 years, and I've been running my own business since 2020.

I'm relatively new to Durham Region, but definitely not new to design! I work with businesses of all shapes and sizes, creating everything from logos and branding to websites, packaging, advertising, and more.

I take my work seriously, but I believe creativity should come with a little personality, too. And if you've seen my tattoos, you've probably already figured out I'm not your typical corporate designer. 😉

Whether you've been following along for years or you've just discovered Grace By Design, thanks for being here!

And a big thank you to for capturing these photos! I'm so happy with how they turned out.

There are some exciting things happening behind the scenes, and I'm looking forward to sharing more soon. 💙

𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻! 🎨

The Grace By Design rebrand is coming along, and I've hit another decision that's got me scratching my head... 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲!

I've narrowed it down to six options, but I'd love to know which one stands out to you!

👇 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀!

And if you've got a tagline idea of your own that you think would be an even better fit, throw it into the mix! I'm always open to a wildcard. 😄

Also, a big thank you to everyone who voted and shared their thoughts on my new logo options! I took all your feedback and suggestions to heart, and I'm really excited about the direction my new branding is taking.

I'm saving the logo reveal until the entire rebrand is complete, but I can't wait to show you what I've chosen!

Thanks for helping me shape the next chapter of Grace By Design! ❤️

Today is a day for reflection, listening and learning.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who never came home, honour Survivors of residential schools, and recognize the families and Indigenous communities who continue to live with the impacts of this history.

Reconciliation requires more than acknowledgement. It asks us to keep listening, keep learning and carry that understanding forward.

Every Child Matters. 🧡

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 ✨ 𝗔 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀.

A logo is a great place to start, but what happens after the logo is created?

Without clear guidelines, it’s surprisingly easy for a brand to start drifting. Different fonts creep in. Colours change slightly. Logos get used inconsistently. Photos and graphics start feeling like they belong to completely different businesses.

That’s where a 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 comes in.

It creates a clear framework for how your brand should look and feel, from your colours and typography to logo usage, imagery and overall visual direction.

The goal isn’t to make your brand rigid. It’s to make it 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

Swipe through to see the difference a little direction can make. 👉

And if your business has a logo but no real roadmap for what comes next, this is one of my favourite things to create.

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 👀

Full disclosure: 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗱.

Choosing fonts is genuinely one of my favourite parts of the design process. I can spend a frankly unreasonable amount of time deciding between two typefaces that, to most normal humans, probably look exactly the same. 😂

But here's why it matters:

𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Before someone even reads the words, your font is already helping them decide how your brand 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴.

Professional.
Playful.
Established.
Modern.
Creative.
Technical.
Luxurious.
Approachable.

The exact same words can communicate something completely different depending on how they're presented.

That's why choosing a brand font shouldn't simply come down to "𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲."

It should support your brand's personality, speak to your audience, and work consistently across everything from your website and social media to signage and printed materials.

Because whether you realize it or not...
𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And yes, some of us are listening to it a little more enthusiastically than others. 🤓

Well, my 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 posts have officially backfired. 😂

While talking about how important it is for a brand to reflect who you are, who you’re trying to reach and where your business is going, I started looking at my own branding and thinking...

𝘏𝘮𝘮. 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘴 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦.

Grace By Design has evolved over the years, and so has the kind of work I’m doing and the direction I want the business to continue growing. So, I’ve been working on a refreshed look that feels 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻, while still having a little creative personality.

One detail I particularly love is hidden in the 𝗔 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗘. It’s designed around the shape of the 𝗽𝗲𝗻/𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Most people will simply see an A, but there’s a little designer Easter egg tucked in there.

Now I’ve reached the part where I’ve stared at it for far too long and need some fresh eyes.

The difference between these two is intentionally subtle. 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗹, and I am having a surprisingly difficult time choosing between them.

So, help me out:

𝟭 𝗼𝗿 𝟮? 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗹?

One of the trickiest parts of building a brand? Remembering that you’re not necessarily the person it needs to appeal to.

You might love a certain colour, font or design style, but the better question is:

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵?

Good branding considers who your customers are, what they value, what they expect from a business like yours, and how you want them to feel when they interact with your brand.

Your personal taste can absolutely be part of the process. But ultimately, your brand has a job to do.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

✨ 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗵 & 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻

A great website should do more than just look good.

It should build trust, showcase your brand professionally, and make it easy for customers to take the next step.

That was the goal behind the new Total Tops Bath & Kitchen website. Together, we created a modern, clean online presence that reflects the quality of their work while making it simple for visitors to explore their services and request a quote.

I'm proud of how this project came together, and even more excited to see it working for their business.

If your website no longer reflects the quality of your business, it might be time for a refresh.

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽... 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆? 🤷‍♀️

I missed Branding Tip Tuesday by a day, but good design is timeless anyway.

𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙄 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚.

It's actually the opposite.

When a design tries to say everything at once, people don't know where to look. When you give your content room to breathe, your most important message becomes easier to notice, easier to read, and easier to remember.

Take a look at the example in this graphic.

Same product.
Same information.
Very different experience.

Good design isn't about filling every inch of a page. It's about guiding your audience to what matters most.

Sometimes the most powerful design decision is knowing what not to include.

Have you ever seen a flyer, menu or website that just felt... overwhelming? That's usually a white space problem.

___________

💬 What's your first instinct... do you prefer the "Too Crowded" example or the "Breathing Room" version?

🎨 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that a logo is a brand.
A logo is important, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Your brand is also:
🎨 Your colours
🔤 Your typography
📸 Your photography
💬 Your tone of voice

⭐ The experience people have when they interact with your business
When all of those pieces work together consistently, people begin to recognize and trust your business. That's where strong branding really starts.

What's one business that comes to mind when you think of great branding? I'd love to hear your answers!
