Remember that field research need not be complicated, does not have to take an excessive amount of time, and does not have to involve specialist researchers. In fact, while a good field study always yields a report that can be read and understood by people uninvolved in the study, part of the point of field research is to get out there and talk with the people who will use their product. Get to know and understand them.

Last week, we talked about deliverables and activities done at each phase of product design so This week, we would be unpacking field studies, one of the activities done during the discovery phase of the product design lifecycle.

Today’s all about UX deliverables. We’ve all been on projects where grouping UX activities can be a bit tough to do given the theoretical nature of design. So here’s a way to group them for the different stages of product development.

A user journey map is basically a graphical representation of the actual process that an individual goes through from start to finish in order to reach a target/goal. At its simplest form, a user journey map displays a sequence of user interactions over a period of time. In this way, it can be said to represent a "flow" or a "story" within a user interface. In essence, a user journey map focuses on accurately representing user experiences from the very start until the end of a particular interface.

The phases of Design Thinking
1. Empathy: understand and be sensitive to your users
2. Define: your users’, their problem(s), and your insights
3. Ideate: generate innovative ideas beyond obvious solutions
4. Prototype: sketch or simulate solutions for the problem(s)
5. Test: your solutions, refine prototypes.
6. Implement: your designs and iterate

Design thinking is a general term used to describe a particular set of practical, abstract and structural thinking processes by which creative design concepts are created. The discipline of design thinking started with the birth of the industrial revolution and has become ever more influential in the design and building science ever since. The practice of design thinking can be applied to a range of disciplines including architecture, product design and manufacturing design, home and garden design, and interior design. In addition, it has also become increasingly important in the social and aesthetic arenas, with design thinkers influencing political and cultural choices about style and design. Design Thinking is also used to explain the process of design development and innovation, ranging from the inception of new designs, to their production and marketing, and to the design process itself.

What does design thinking mean to you?
