✨ Websites often peak on launch day, then slowly drift out of date. Autonomous websites, continuously optimized by agents after launch, aim to change that. But there’s a catch: almost nobody wants their site changing entirely on its own. Pierre Burgy shares what they learned building for full website autonomy and the deeper design problem they uncovered along the way: https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2026/08/why-website-should-never-stop-changing/

Beyond the @ Symbol: Meet the Designer Behind the Threads Identity.

Jez Burrows, a British designer and illustrator based in London, played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of Threads. Working within Meta’s Instagram design team, Burrows was the craftsperson responsible for physically drawing the final "unbroken line" logo. The emblem is a modern, stylised interpretation of the "@" symbol, designed to represent a user's voice and the continuous flow of digital conversation. While Burrows executed the final mark, the project was a massive collaborative effort. It was overseen by creative director Cynthia Pratomo and involved key contributions from designers like Ryan O’Rourke. The team drew inspiration from the Tamil and Malayalam alphabets, eventually refining the loop using the "Instagram Sans" typeface to ensure it felt like a natural extension of the existing Instagram ecosystem.

The Golden Ratio Secret Behind Warner Bros.’ Sleek 2019 Makeover.

In 2019, Emily Oberman and her team at Pentagram spearheaded a bold modernisation of the legendary Warner Bros. shield. Recognizing the need for a versatile "digital-first" identity, Oberman streamlined the 1923 classic by removing the iconic sash and refining the proportions of the "WB" letters using the golden ratio. The redesign transitioned the brand from a static, heavy emblem to a sleek, flat-blue monogram that thrives across social media and mobile platforms. By introducing the custom "Warner Bros. Sans" typeface, Oberman created a cohesive visual language that successfully bridges the studio’s storied Hollywood heritage with a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic.

The collaboration between Alex Tourville and Sawyer Merritt was the primary catalyst behind the rebranding of Twitter to X. Tourville, a Canadian physics engineer, originally created the mathematical-style “X” logo for his podcast. When Elon Musk crowdsourced ideas for a new visual identity, Merritt, a high-profile Tesla influencer, submitted Tourville’s design. The logo is a refined version of a Unicode character, reflecting a minimalist, Art Deco aesthetic that appealed to Musk’s preference for sleek, futuristic branding. Both men are deeply embedded in the Musk ecosystem as long-term investors and vocal advocates, making their contribution a symbolic bridge between the company and its most dedicated community members.

The X logo shares a common thread of high-contrast, geometric simplicity with Musk’s other ventures. The Tesla logo features a stylized "T" representing a cross-section of an electric motor, while the SpaceX "X" includes a trajectory line symbolizing a rocket’s flight path. Neuralink utilizes a sinusoidal wave to mimic neural threads, and The Boring Company features a thick "O" representing a tunneling pipe. Finally, Grok’s slashed circle aligns with the angular, mathematical visual style found across Musk’s entire portfolio of futurist companies.
