An educated worker is a safe worker.

With no standardized form of safety training in the industry, new and young workers are entering the workforce with all different levels of safety knowledge - from a lot to a little. Which means it’s up to employers to be educating their workers with the right safety training.

And that knowledge will start to trickle into other pieces of their life. By arming workers with the right safety training we can start to build a more naturally conscious workforce that practices and preaches safe practices at home, too.

And if our future workers grow up in a home that always puts safety first, we’ll start to see a new generation of workers entering the industry with an even stronger sense of safety.

One tell-tale sign that your safety system is ready for an upgrade?

If you’re still relying on pen and paper!

The truth is that pen and paper just can’t keep up with industry standards anymore.

Using these out-dated systems can lead to errors and inconsistencies that put your business and your workers at risk. Not to mention, the hidden costs associated with it. Just think about how much time is spent digging through paper forms for an audit or collecting signatures on site.

A comprehensive digital safety platform eliminates those inconsistencies and hidden costs and makes your safety management actually manageable again.

Looking for other signs that you should go digital?

We need more young people in trades.

A simple statement with a not-so-simple solution.

As the skilled labour pool continues to shrink and we see a decline in young tradespeople entering the workforce, we need to find a way to introduce young people to everything that a career in trades can offer.

And the Abbotsford School District is doing just that.

Last month, our Director of Safety Insight and Innovation, Amandeep Beesla, spoke to the students of Abbotsford’s Heavy Equipment Operators Program. This program offers high school students theoretical and practical experience with equipment in a local pit and gives them the opportunity to explore a potential career in trades before they’ve even left high school. After the semester, students have their heavy equipment operator apprenticeship through Industry Training Authority

SALUS is proud to be a part of this initiative in encouraging a career in trades for our community’s students.

And wishing all these future heavy equipment operators the best in their journey!

COVID-19 caused a massive shift in the way the world viewed health & safety.

But it wasn’t just physical health that received our attention. Because the very safety measures we put in place to protect us against the virus also became a catalyst for a mental health battle that would begin to affect people around the globe.

But, with increased struggles came more open and honest conversations around the topic of mental health. And we started to see our industry make enormous strides in acknowledging this issue that so many of our workers face everyday.

In this recent interview with EHS Daily Advisor, our Director of Safety Insight & Innovation, Amandeep Beesla, speaks to some of the positive changes we’ve made as a community over these last two years.

“As a safety community, [before the pandemic], we were starting to talk about mental health, but we weren’t there yet.”

Fast forward to today, and we have more resources in place to help those who are struggling, we have employers who prioritize their employee’s mental well-being, and we are actively working to de-stigmatize the topic of mental health.

While we still have a long way to go, it’s conversations like these that are helping us get there even quicker. Be sure to watch Amandeep's full interview in the link below!
