My grandfather Percival and his older brother Eddy fought in the First World War, Eddy being killed by friendly fire at Passchendaele when he was only 21. My grandfather survived the war, including the infamous battle at Vimy Ridge, and enlisted and fought in the Second World War as well, which he also survived.
In his retirement years my grandfather became an avid artist, especially in water colours, of which I am lucky to have a few hanging on our walls. His son (my uncle) Gary has taken up water colour painting and does beautiful hand painted cards which he sends to his 3 sisters and others. He didn’t title this one he sent to me but I call it In Memory of Eddy, and have applied it to a stamp design in honour of Remembrance Day 2021 and the hundredth anniversary of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
