BC has some pretty incredible wildlife, and National Wildlife Day feels like a nice excuse to appreciate it a little more. From the coast to the mountains, there is a lot around us worth looking after.

September is National Preparedness Month, which is a good reminder that preparedness includes your technology too.

Most organizations already have plans for things like bad weather, power outages, or other disruptions. It is worth giving your IT the same attention, so your team knows what to do if systems are unavailable, equipment fails, or someone clicks on a suspicious email.

You cannot plan for every situation, but a little preparation can make disruptions much easier to manage. Clear processes, reliable backups, and a team that knows who to call can help everyone get back to work with less confusion.

If you have not reviewed your IT preparedness plan in a while, September is a good time to take another look. And if you are not sure where to start, we are always happy to help.

Meta’s $18 billion teen safety settlement includes some significant changes for younger users, including stronger age verification, a two-hour daily limit, restrictions on overnight use and notifications, and more protective default settings.

Those changes put more responsibility on the platform, but they don’t remove the role of parents or young people themselves. Online safety will probably always need a mix of better product design, clearer boundaries, and more awareness of how these platforms are being used.

What stands out is the shift toward sharing more of that responsibility with the platform itself, rather than leaving families to manage everything through settings and supervision. It’s still too early to know how effective these changes will be, but they point toward a more balanced approach to online safety.

The company agreed to pay nearly $18 billion and pledged to impose new safety controls on Facebook and Instagram.

AI Tip of The Week: Stop writing the same email from scratch.

If you find yourself sending the same type of email again and again, let AI draft the first version for you. Try this prompt:

“Write a [friendly/professional] email to a customer who [received a quote last week and hasn’t responded / missed their appointment / just completed their first service]. Keep it brief, no more than 4 sentences. Don’t be pushy.”

Once you have a version you like, save it. Next time, you can update a few details instead of starting with a blank screen.

A small change, but one that can save you a surprising amount of time.

Most of the AI tools people know today are built and run entirely by the companies behind them, which means you generally use the tool as it’s offered.

Open-weight AI is starting to change that by giving organizations more flexibility in how AI can be adapted and used. In practical terms, it means more choice around how AI fits into different kinds of work.

That matters because a quick social post, an internal policy, and a spreadsheet full of sensitive information shouldn’t automatically be treated the same way.

Our latest blog looks at what this shift means in practice, and why the future of AI may be less about finding one perfect tool and more about choosing the right one for the job.

The computer your business no longer needs could still be incredibly useful to someone else.

Through our Technology Recycling Program, we prepare suitable business technology for reuse and help connect it with organizations that can put it to good work. When equipment has reached the end of its useful life, we also make sure it is handled and recycled responsibly.

If your business has technology sitting unused, it may still have another chapter ahead of it.

AI tip of the week:

If AI gives you a weak answer, try giving it a clearer path to follow. A simple way to do that is to include the task, audience, context, format, and tone.

For example, instead of writing, “Write something about our new service,” try, “Write a three-sentence announcement for existing customers about our new same-day service option. Explain why it benefits them. Keep it friendly and direct.”

Same tool. Better instructions. Much better result.
