JBJ Tech Decoder: What the heck is a CPU?

You hear terms like CPU, processor, Intel Core i5, i7, Ryzen 5... but what does any of that actually mean?

In simple terms, the CPU is basically the brain of your computer.

Every time you open a program, browse the internet, work on a document, or ask your computer to do something, the CPU helps process those instructions and get the job done.

Think of it this way: the more you're asking your computer to do, the more work you're giving its "brain."

Does that mean a more powerful CPU automatically makes every computer better? Not necessarily. RAM, storage, software, and what you actually use the computer for matter too.

That's why when you're buying a computer, we don't just look for the biggest number — we help you find what actually makes sense for what you do.

Tech help should feel helpful, not overwhelming. 💻

Ever had something pop up on your computer and thought, "I have absolutely no idea what this thing is asking me?" You're definitely not alone.

Whether it's email trouble, pop-ups, updates, printer issues, setup questions, or a computer that just isn't acting right, we're happy to slow things down, explain what's happening in plain English, and help you figure it out.

No question is a silly question. If you're not sure — ask us.

Would you do this in person? 🚨💻

If a stranger walked up to you on the street and asked for your password, banking details, email login, or two-step verification code, you would probably say no right away.

But when that same request comes through a phone call, email, or pop-up warning, it can feel more believable in the moment, especially when they make it sound urgent.

Scammers rely on panic and pressure. If someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for personal information, login details, payment, or a verification code, stop before you share anything.

Not sure if something is real? Do not click, do not call the number on the pop-up, and do not give out codes over the phone. Bring it to JBJ Computers and let us take a look.

Today, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities. We also recognize the importance of listening, learning, and reflecting on Canada's history and our shared responsibility toward reconciliation.

Our store is closed today as we take time to reflect on the significance of this day. We will reopen during our regular business hours tomorrow.
