Our CEO, James Wadsworth, jumped off a bungy platform in October. On purpose.

Helm took part in Toss The Boss in support of the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society. James suited up, strapped in, briefly reconsidered everything, and then took the plunge anyway.

The result: we received $4000 in donations, which we matched to ultimately raise $8,000 for the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society!

Thank you, James, for being a good sport about gravity. And thank you to the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society for the work you do here on Vancouver Island. And of course, everyone who donated - thanks for helping us make a difference!

That’s a wrap on Helm Conference 2026!

Nearly 200 people from across the maritime industry joined us at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, making this the largest Helm Conference we’ve ever hosted in Canada.

Over three days we packed in keynotes, a first-ever Science Fair, customer-led sessions, Unconference tables, and hands-on training. What stays with us most, though, is the conversations: operators comparing notes, customers telling us exactly what they need next, and old friends picking up right where they left off. For our team, it was incredibly rewarding. Thank you to everyone who made the trip.

Oh yes, and the unbelievable response to Admiral. Stay tuned for more on that.

KOTUG OptiPort returns as a Technology Partner at Helm Conference 2026!

OptiPort is AI-driven scheduling for harbor towage, built by people who run tugs for a living. It pulls tide, wind, berth, crew, and job data into one planning view and works out which tug should take which job, so dispatchers are making decisions on facts instead of instinct. It also handles port activity reporting, crew planning, and berth scheduling out of Rotterdam.

Helm CONNECT Logistics and OptiPort have been integrated since 2022, and together they schedule more than 75% of towage jobs in some of the busiest ports in the US, including LA, Long Beach, Port Arthur, and Tampa.

LionRock Maritime is joining us as a Technology Partner at Helm Conference 2026!

LionRock turns AIS data into towage intelligence, no onboard hardware required. Their tools read tug movement to work out fuel use, emissions, speed behaviour, and job-level activity, then hand it back as something a fleet manager can act on. PortExplorer for market and port traffic, speed tracking for the difference between a captain running 650 RPM and 550 RPM, and a market data API if you want it in your own BI stack. Built specifically for harbor towage, which describes a good chunk of the room.

They'll be running a session on the efficiency and safety metrics you can pull out of AIS data, and they'll have an exhibit table across all three days.
