Happy 2026. This is going to be a great year for a number of reasons.
1. We will start to become more active. Over the past few years, ByteCheck has been relatively quiet. A quick test of Anti-Virus's here and there but nothing too deep.
2. We will do more testing of A-V products on a dedicated Virtual Machine to ensure the product works and a perform some performance testing.
3. There is a quick pod cast in the works that we will try and add to this site.

Stay tuned. We are here and working on content.

Not sure if I mentioned the following. Be careful with the Panda Security software. When I finished testing it, I was unable to simply uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs of the Control Panel. In the end I needed to literally RIP it out from the registry to fully remove it.

I would NOT recommend this product due to the complexity of removal.

ByteCheck is still alive and well. Not much to add to the site at this time. So let's continue with the diligence and vigilance in regards to your home pc/information security. Things to help ensure that your personal data is secure.

1. Ensure that you keep up-to-date with Microsoft Operating System updates. As much as people may say they don't like the Microsoft Updates, they are important. With each update security holes are closed and your system should run more efficiently.

2. Keep weekly virus scans running. If they are not set to run automatically be sure to run them on your own. If you do not know the steps to take for this, reach out to ByteCheck and we can walk you through the process.

3. Ensure that your Anti-Virus has the latest virus definitions installed. These definitions have the disinfectant for the most recent viruses that have been released in the world. Always keep these recent for the best protection.

4. This one relates to your email usage. Should you receive and email from an unknown sender, DO NOT OPEN It! Delete the email from your Inbox and then delete it from your Recycle bin or Trash. Get Rid Of It. Also if you receive an email in your Spam folder, be sure it is spam and if it is, block the sender and delete it.

Keep your system clean and up-to-date. Keep your personal information safe, and you will have no problems. Scammers are getting better and better at disguising themselves, so ensure you are protected. Have a great and Happy Computer Experience.

After using and testing the Panda Security Software for a month or two, I found the biggest issue with the platform. It will not uninstall. So even though it is simple and straightforward to use it embeds itself into your computer and will not easily uninstall. I tried 3 times with the Remove Programs and it would fail 3/4 of the way through. In the end I was forced to backup my registry and search, remove each instance of Panda it found.

In then end, I would suggest to stay away from this particular software. You get what you pay for. Do NOT Cheap out with your anti-virus software.

We are close to the end of another year.
This year we have tested and learned New Anti-Virus software, learned that asking questions about what you pc is doing is OK. And most of all the be vigilant. The more you question something the more secure you as a user will be.

Until next year, be safe, be secure and enjoy the holiday season.

Earlier this week I started speaking about Anti-Virus software. More specifically "Free" anti-virus software. There was one that I did not mention, and it come prepackaged with Microsoft Windows 10 and 11. The built in Anti-virus software with the Microsoft OS has come a long way, it is one I would recommend, and most people don't even know it is there.

When looking for Anti-virus software and VPN (Virtual Private network) software beware. Free may be stated but it may not be. I have looked and there is very little that is offered for free. Here are two choices that I have used. , . Panda I am just trying out. It has multiple levels to choose from, and you will need to sign up for an account.
Download the software and installation is pretty straight forward. PandaSecurity works with a browser named Opera, it will ask to install, you do not need to, but if you want to try a different internet browser then go ahead. During the installation there are 3 numbers to call for support, should it be needed. UK, US and Canada, make a note of the Canadian number just in case, it never hurts to have.

Once the installation is complete you can open it or click finish. I want to show you the interface so I clicked on the "Open" option. You will be asked to enter the email and password used to create the panda account to open. From there you can see that you are protected and to run a scan, simply click on the magnifying glass. Then you have 3 choices for scanning. Critical areas, Full Scan,

I will let this run for a while and test the functionality as well as reliability and give my feedback.

As computers and Artificial Intelligence continue to play a larger role in everyone's lives, it is always important to think twice before clicking on links, whether in an email or a website. Remember, if you don't recognize the email link or a site just doesn't feel right to you, stay away. Delete the email before follow8ng the link, bypass the site if it feels wrong.

There are many unscrupulous people out there, don't get caught by one.

I get asked this question multiple times from people who use my service. If you look at the picture that was sent to me this is a pop up window talking about an update request from Microsoft. The tool being used is actually part of the Windows 10/11 operating system, and one that can be turned off. However, this customer likes to see and know what is being installed on their computer system. Let's break this notification down.

1. The notification is indicating that a new startup program is detected. It goes on to the next line and shows where that program lives. As we see it is in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeWebView\... directory. This is a valid directory in the operating system.

2. We are being told that it can slow the computer down if it runs in the background. This is true, but it is simply installing an update for the Microsoft Edge Web Browser.

3. Further down we see that it is a product of Microsoft Corporation and gives a version of 130.0.2849.52. A quick search on the Google Search Engine brings us to the following webpage
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=x64%20edge and the first item in the list is this update.

We can now be certain that this is a valid update for your computer and that it has been tested and approved by Microsoft. This is a safe item to install and aid in a better more effective internet browsing experience.

We are into February of 2021 now and still in a lock down here in Ottawa. As we spend more and more time at home either streaming TV, playing video games, on Youtube or simply surfing the internet. This means our data and on-line life is more prominent then ever. Protect it by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). This software will protect you and your family by hiding your IP (Internet Protocol) address and ensuring that you and yours are safe.

There are many out there, some are free and some you need to pay for. Choose the one that you want to use or try many. We at ByteCheck can help you choose.
