Just Hang Up - a new cybersecurity campaign recently launched by WPS here in Manitoba aimed at Grandparents, but really all of us need to be aware of how good this scam actually is.
A loved one calls begging for help/money and tells you not to call police or parents. The kicker? it SOUNDS like them. AI has gotten VERY good at deep fakes and scrapping the internet for information about you and who you are connected to.
Hang up - call them back to their number to check or call parents/police.
Our tip? Having a 'Family Word' you only share offline with loved ones, to signal you are who you say you are.
This isn't just grandparents either. Every day there are new reports of spoofing emails, calls and even video that have fooled many business owners and finance executives into sending money places, thinking the boss has asked them to.
Just hang up - call them back at the number YOU have on file to double check.
