Google quietly changed how ads get made, and it affects the ads you see every day.
On July 1, 2026, Google updated its Ads Terms of Service. The change applied automatically to every business running Google Ads, no action needed on their end.
Google can now automatically generate and adjust ad content without oversight. This is not as an optional feature a business has to turn on.
In practice, that means more of the ads you scroll past could be written or adjusted by AI in real time, without a person reviewing each one before it goes live.
If an automatically generated ad includes wrong information, like outdated pricing or a false claim, the business running that ad is still responsible for it, not Google.
What this means for you: as more ads get built by AI on the fly, it's worth treating ad claims with a bit more scrutiny, especially around pricing, availability, or specific promises.
If something in an ad seems off, it may be worth checking directly with the business before assuming it's accurate. Unfortunately, making more work for the customer.
