Data centers in space - coming soon? 🚀

That was one of the more memorable ideas from keynote speaker Thomas Zurbuchen at Cloud Native Zürich 2026 - and just one of many great moments from another excellent edition of the event.

Across two venues, Abaton and Soho Zürich, more than 400 attendees came together for a day of learning, networking, and discussion across four tracks - including a dedicated Sovereignty Track for the first time. VSHN was proud to participate again as a Silver Sponsor, with Servala sponsoring the Sovereignty Track.

A few highlights from our side:
- Tobias Brunner gave a talk on how Servala came to be - and where it's heading as a growing ecosystem of cloud providers, software vendors, MSPs, and implementation partners.
- Aarno Aukia spoke about running LLMs the cloud-native way, building an open-source LLM stack on Kubernetes - and why that matters for sovereignty and operational control.
- Markus Speth was track lead for the new Sovereignty Track and moderated a panel discussion bringing together perspectives from across the ecosystem.
And yes, our LEGO sets at the booth found new owners again this year. 🙂

Thanks to the whole organizing team for another excellent event - the bar keeps getting higher every year!

Quick recap of our panel discussion "Digital Sovereignty - Perspectives from the Ecosystem" yesterday at Cloud Native Zürich 2026:

Five panelists, five very different angles - an implementation partner, a cloud provider, a managed service provider, a software vendor, and civil society - all wrestling with the same question.
Sovereignty isn't binary - it's a spectrum across many dimensions, and it's about much more than where data physically lives. Complete sovereignty, controlling everything end to end, isn't realistic or even desirable. The more useful goal is understanding your dependencies and making conscious choices about them.

And most importantly: no single company, vendor, or government can solve this alone. It takes the whole ecosystem.

Big news for digital sovereignty in Switzerland 🇨🇭

Switch - the digitalisation partner for Swiss universities and operator of the national research and education network - is joining Servala as a Cloud Service Provider.

This partnership is about more than expanding a product portfolio. It's about building a collaborative sovereign cloud ecosystem where Swiss providers work together to give universities, research institutions, and other organisations access to modern, cloud-native managed services - without hyperscaler dependency.

What this means in practice: universities and research institutions will soon be able to provision a managed database, cache, or queue at the touch of a button, operated on trusted Swiss infrastructure.

"By integrating Servala, we are expanding our Switch Cloud service portfolio with key services that are indispensable in modern software development." - Roman Bachmann, Switch

"Swiss providers can collaborate and innovate together, for the benefit of the entire ecosystem." - Tobias Brunner, VSHN

🚀 New VSHN AppCat Release

CloudNativePG is now the default PostgreSQL implementation for all newly created PostgreSQL instances in AppCat.

This marks another important step toward a more Kubernetes-native, production-ready PostgreSQL experience - with continued improvements around operations, scheduling consistency and platform reliability.

This release also includes:
• Improved topologyKey handling for CloudNativePG
• Better Garage CRD version handling
• Improved warnings for enableSSHInRelease

What do you do when Kubernetes Cluster Autoscaler supports the scaling logic you need, but not your cloud provider?

In his follow-up to last week's Cloud Native Computing Switzerland Meetup, Marco De Luca walks through how to teach Cluster Autoscaler to speak cloudscale.ch - without forking it or waiting for an upstream provider.

The answer: externalgrpc. Cluster Autoscaler stays the brain (scheduling simulation, node group selection, scale-down logic). A separate gRPC service becomes the hands (creating VMs, tagging, deleting, mapping nodes back to cloud resources).

Marco covers:
🔹 How the autoscaler's 10-second reconciliation loop actually works
🔹 Why TemplateNodeInfo is the most underrated provider method
🔹 The six RPCs that matter, and which ones you can stub
🔹 Real gotchas: lock ordering, why the CCM matters, and the "everything wired up but nothing scales" bug

A useful read for anyone running Kubernetes on a sovereign or smaller cloud platform where in-tree providers aren't an option.

Recap: Cloud Native Computing Switzerland Meetup - May 2026 🇨🇭

Yesterday's CNC Switzerland Meetup at the VSHNtower in Zürich brought together the Swiss cloud-native community for four solid technical talks:

🔹 Luka Rumora on Kuberik - Kubernetes-native CD that goes beyond "kubectl apply"
🔹 Hadi Cherkaoui (CM Informatik AG) on building a Minecraft panel in Rust with kube-rs - no CRD, no controller, on purpose
🔹 Vadim Bauer (8gears, CNCF Harbor maintainer) on surviving open-source in the age of vibe coding
🔹 Marco De Luca (VSHN) on plugging any cloud into the Cluster Autoscaler via externalgrpc

🇨🇭 We are happy to be back as a Matterhorn sponsor of Swiss Software Festival 2026 - and this year, we are not only sponsoring, but also on stage.

The festival takes place on June 24, 2026 at uptownBasel in Arlesheim, bringing together 600+ peers, two plenary sessions, and 75+ speakers across seven thematic tracks and two special tracks.

🎤 In Plenary Session 1, "The future of software development," Aarno Aukia gives a keynote titled "Digital Neutrality: Switzerland's Engineering Advantage in the AI Era" - exploring what it means for Switzerland to build software autonomously in a world increasingly shaped by AI.
🛠 We are also Track Chair of Tech Track 2, "Platform Engineering & Software Architecture," where Tobias Brunner will speak on "From platforms to ecosystems - why software innovation is a team sport."

Why does this matter to us? Because in times of geopolitical uncertainty, more and more Swiss organizations are looking for autonomy-first, Swiss-made solutions that support digital sovereignty. That is exactly the conversation we want to help shape - with our customers, our partners, and the wider community.

Looking forward to good conversations, strong talks, and meeting many of you in person.
