Swiss Cloud Native Day is back on the Gurten on 17 September, and so are we.

Sixth edition, 250 participants, two tracks, and a funicular ride up a mountain outside Bern. It's run by the nonprofit association bernerit.rocks and built for the people who actually operate these technologies in production. That's why we keep sponsoring it.

Where to find VSHN:

📍 Our booth in the Uptown area, right next to one of the two session rooms 🎤 A VSHN sponsor talk (time, room and topic to follow) 🍻 Drinks and party in the Pavillon from 18:00

Worth noting: the sovereignty thread runs through this year's entire programme. Confidential computing, the paradox of cloud sovereignty, supply chain security. It's also the question behind Servala, our sovereign app store. Come and take the idea apart with us over a coffee.

We have been running the Cloud Native Computing Switzerland meetup for nearly a decade. Over 3'000 members and more than 50 meetups later, the next one is on Tuesday, 15 September at the VSHNtower in Zürich.

Three talks:

▸ How to: securing your clusters
Benjamin Koltermann, cenroq AG. Everyone wants secure Kubernetes clusters, hardly anyone really gets there. How clusters get compromised despite configurations that look solid on paper, and how to find those gaps before someone else does.

▸ Paddelbuch: How Kiro Changed the Game
Chris Bingham, CTO Switzerland at Fujitsu. What happened to paddelbuch.ch after Kiro arrived, and how one unexpected conversation at re:Invent 2025 changed its technical foundation.

▸ A swiss, cloud-native alternative to Vercel and Heroku
Christian Blättler, zeitlos.software. Lucity brings the Vercel developer experience to plain Kubernetes and Helm, with one hard rule: you can eject at any time.

The CNC Meetup is a neutral place for the Swiss tech community, not a stage for sales pitches. Free entry, apéro included, and every talk gets recorded and published on vshn.tv.

Room capacity is limited and the last editions filled up quite quickly. Full program and registration:

"Sovereignty is an architecture question, not a legal one."

That's the line from Aarno Aukia's keynote that keeps coming up in conversations with customers, so here it is to watch in full:

🎥 Digital Neutrality: Switzerland's Engineering Advantage
https://buff.ly/iK5i9F7

What he unpacks in it:

→ Why neutrality is something you engineer into a system, not something you certify after the fact
→ Where dependency actually gets created (control planes, identity, tooling, support contracts) and why the data location debate distracts from it
→ What Switzerland has structurally that most markets don't, and why that advantage expires if nobody builds on it
→ How to tell the difference between a sovereign platform and a sovereign-flavoured marketing page

If you're currently sitting in a hyperscaler exit discussion, or defending one to your board, this is a useful 20 minutes.

Recorded at Swiss Software Festival 2026.

📢 Call for speakers! We've got 1 confirmed talk for our next Cloud Native Computing Switzerland Meetup (Tue, Sep 15, 3-6pm, VSHN Zürich) - and 2 more slots open.

Got a cloud-native, Kubernetes, or open-source project to share? We'd love to hear from you. All sessions in English, no sales pitches, open-source projects only. We especially welcome speakers from underrepresented groups.

Digital asset platforms sit at a rare intersection: regulated discipline meets open-source speed.

At the Open Source in Finance Forum London 2026, VSHN's Liene Luksika shared lessons from operating a regulated digital asset platform on open, cloud-native infrastructure - what worked, and what didn't.

Three patterns kept showing up across regulated financial infrastructure:

- Stable core, agile edge - proven core systems stay untouched while a cloud-native layer iterates fast at the edge
- Delegate platform ops, own your core - everyone focuses on what they do best, which concentrates compliance burden onto whoever can carry it
- Evolutionary migration, not big bang - you don't need the full managed stack on day one, but you do need to design the handoff path from the start

She also didn't stop at the success story. Open questions worth probing: did key migrations happen too late, how do you keep consistency at global scale, and what should an RFP really screen for beyond technical specs?

The Public Health Authority of Frankfurt is a new global Red Hat success story - featuring VSHN 🎉

GA-Lotse, a federated open source platform for 25 health authorities in Hesse, runs as a managed service by VSHN on Red Hat OpenShift, hosted on Exoscale.

Tender to production in 3 months. Published on openCode.de - a first for German public health.

"Buy European" isn't enough. "Buy Swiss" isn't either.

In his latest blog post, Aarno Aukia connects UCL economist Cecilia Rikap's concept of "epistemic capture" to what we see every day running infrastructure for regulated Swiss organizations: a Swiss flag on the invoice doesn't equal sovereignty. Neither does a French AI model running on Azure.

The real question isn't where your vendor is headquartered. It's whether you can replace them without replacing the technology underneath.

Three things actual sovereignty requires:
→ Open-source foundations you can audit, modify, and migrate away from (Thomas Wüst, ti&m CEO, shares how forced vendor migrations pushed them toward open source)
→ Operational control over the runtime, not just data location
→ Governance and accountability over geography

Also featured: Penny Schiffer's view from UBS on scaling AI adoption, and why the gap between leaders and the rest of Swiss IT is widening.

The Switch Cloud Forward Forum Day 2026 brought together cloud providers, technology partners, and the Swiss higher education community to discuss the future of cloud, AI, and digital sovereignty. ☁️🇨🇭

We had the opportunity to present a joint use case with Exoscale and HIN, showing how Swiss organizations can move beyond vendor lock-in towards secure, sovereign cloud platforms built on open technologies.

A big thank you to Switch for organizing another excellent event and to everyone who stopped by for the great discussions throughout the day.

650 people. Record heat. And some of the sharpest conversations we've had at a Swiss tech event in a while.

Swiss Software Festival 2026 was a great day and VSHN was right in the middle of it. Aarno Aukia on the plenary stage making the case for digital sovereignty as an engineering decision (not a compliance checkbox). Tobias Brunner explaining what sausages, furniture and airplanes have to do with sovereign cloud. Markus Speth chairing Tech Track 2 alongside ti&m and Abacus Research.

And a shoutout to Mohammad Alavi from HIN for taking the stage in the Sovereignty Track to talk real-world sovereignty in Swiss healthcare - always good to see customers leading the conversation.

Thanks to Swiss Made Software for a brilliant second edition. See you in 2027. 🙌

Digital Neutrality: Switzerland's Engineering Advantage in the AI Era - watch Aarno Aukia's closing session from yesterday's Swiss Software Festival 2026.
AI writes the code. But who controls the runtime? Aarno makes the case for digital neutrality as an engineering discipline - not a political stance. AI is the most centralizing force the software industry has seen. The answer isn't avoiding platforms, it's architecting to survive change.
