"Tech skills are required for Software Engineers" – Very correct.
"Soft skills will 3x your salary and career growth" – What Software Engineers realize too late.
Doesn't seem like it at the beginning of your career, when you're trying to prove your technical ability. But after a few years, promotions are based on how well you work with people. Organize work. Prioritize your time and focus. Translate ideas between teams. Get along.
And frankly, how much people like you.
I see lots of "But tech skills are important toooo!" and I'm like... yeah, no, we know. We've known forever. 😊
But what people have not been talking about (as much) is how important soft skills are.
We idolize the brilliant jerk, ignoring that they get passed over for promotions because nobody can stand them. Or we tell people "You need to know more languages!" when they're actually not passing interviews because they're not good at telling stories and selling themselves.
So yeah, just 'cause you're super nice + a smooth talker + a great public speaker does not mean you're automatically a great Software Engineer.
And also, just 'cause you are brilliant in JavaScript + Rust + C # + Python doesn't mean you're a great one either (even if you're employed as one).
Tech skills prove that you have the base line competency. You can build software. You must have this no matter what.
Soft skills prove that you can build relationships, which ultimately makes more money for your company and a better, more enjoyable career for you.
So you need both. Just excuse us while we over-emphasize soft skills to make up for lost time.
