on how to make use of your university days
How do you make sure that you don't waste any of your school days including the hours after school, your off days and the weekends? It is not enough to just go to school and amass certificates, take advantage of every little spare time that presents itself. The job market is highly competitive and you must measure up to fit in so don't give chances. Prepare yourself while still in school so that you won't have to conceiving the idea that there are no jobs or you need someone who knows someone who knows another in order to get a job. et me teach you how;
1. Stay on the know about seminars and conferences happening in the towns in which you are based in your field or in something you are having passion about. Check , , and some personalities who are fun of organizing such informative seminars, conferences and trainings.
2. Volunteer to work for free after school, during your off days and during weekends in restaurants, supermarkets, shops, offices and many more pleasures. In offices, you can volunteer to organize and archive their documents if you are a Business Administration student, as a marketing student, you can volunteer to sell in someone's shop, or if you are offering Hospitality and Catering, you can volunteer to sell in restaurants, café, or even undertake part times in local hotels around as housekeeping attendant, bellman, waiter, waitress etc...
3. Instead of greeting everybody on social media platforms and checking latest, search for influencers in your field, network and bond with them before time. Stop making mad rushes and appearing desperate and cheap when you are done from school meanwhile you had all time to build solid relationships for yourself and be better placed before time.
4. Undertake internships during holidays. Stop being mama's boys an girls and rushing home each time to relax and sleep 13 hours a day. I am not saying you can't stay in your parents house and undertake your internships, no, I am saying make use of your life and avoid last minute rushes.
5. There are local NGOs around whose doors are always opened to accepting you to use their company and practice your theoretical knowledge. Make use of them. If you have difficulties finding where to undertake an internship be it academic or professional, get to Your Career Companion through +237 674 542 410.
6. Network with people of value. Stay connected with people who will provoke you to be at your best and see opportunities amidst challenging times. Be mentored by professionals who can lead you correctly in this journey of life, shape you for a better tomorrow and transforms your mindset in a positive way.
7. Undertake more courses and certification programs online through sites like Alison.com, Coursera, Edx, LinkedIn, read books etc.... Remember your teachers only educate you with the basics but the in-depth knowledge and proper application of the theory is 100% on you. Take up the challenge and own the driver seat of your life. Make a difference and avoid last minutes tensions and frustrations.
Too much alcohol, partying and flexing during your free times will only contribute to the frustration that will consume you immediately after school when you will be faced with the realities of life. Make use of your lives my dear future job seekers and increase your chances of landing a good job immediately after school. If some of us had the chance to to be told all these, I am sure we would have been way better since.
Let no one deceives you that with a Masters degree you stand a chance to land a better white collar job with no prior experience. Failure to prepare is preparing to embrace frustrations, embarrassments and series of rejections. Let an opportunity meet you prepared and ready for it.
