Employers spend less than one minute on a so you need to make an impression at the first glance. You need to be concise, straight to the point and make it easy to spares through. The more you make your CV readable and attractive at first sight, the more you increase your chances of getting called up for an interview. Let’s see how you can do this:

1. Write short and concise sentences

Do not use very long and lengthy senses be it in your professional summary or responsibilities and achievements. Make it short! For instance, your professional summary should be at most 5 to 6 short sentences, your achievements should be short sentences of about 4 bullet points max per job duties.

2. Highlight the most important things

Let the employer see different things at different times when he/she scans through your CV. Your name, professional experience, work experience, education, skills, certifications an trainings, references, hobbies etc… Highlight different topics by either bolding them or maintaining a particular font size and font type all through your write up.

3. Quantify your achievements and responsibilities

Let the employer feels the impact you created in the companies you have worked for. Quantify your achievements and incorporate them in the responsibilities you carried out in each company. For instance, instead of saying “collected specimens from patients on a daily basis”, say this instead “collected over 60+ specimens from 40 patients on a daily basis for further clinical analysis”.

4. Make it easy to read

Do not stack all information without proper line spacing and differentiation between topics and the body of the text. Infact, double space from one section to the next. Use bullet points to clearly state one achievement after the other and one skill after the other. Let your CV be readable enough by any employer or recruiter that comes across it.

5. Use unique font sizes and stick to it

You can use up to a maximum of 3 different font sizes and 2 font types to differentiate different things on your CV from your name, to your topics and dates. Avoid using so many font sizes, it will make your CV so unattractive and boring to glance at.

6. Maximum of 2 different colors. No multicolor

Avoid using very sharp colors like yellow, red, lemon green and pink often in or to color the background of your CV. Remember some people are color bind and your potential employer or recruiter could be one. Use a maximum of two different cool colors or blend of colors to highlight things like your professional and various job titles, your email and LinkedIn profile link, degrees and certificates etc...

7. Attractive layout logically arranged

Let your CV be presentable at first sight. Let everything be properly aligned and visible enough. If your CV reads from left to right, let it appear so. Avoid spotting some words by the corners, or at the edges of your write-up. Your CV should be simple, with everything in its rightful place depending on the type of CV you are using.

8. Tailor the CV to suite the job description

If you are applying for a job, be keyword sensitive. Tailor your CV to suit the needs of the employer at that time. Do not generalize things rather address the company specifically and let the employer feels the zeal and knowledge you have for their company. Use a targeted CV per job post and be the person the employer is out to find.

9. Make it short e.g 1 to 2 pages maximum

Your CV can be as long as 3 to 5 pages if it is for your personal use. Once it is to be served for the purpose of a job, 1 to 2 pages is the maximum length it should have. Always tailor your CV to the specific job and avoid lengthy writings, repetitions or unnecessary explanations.

10. NO SPELLING OR GRAMMAR MISTAKES!!!

Proofread your CV for any grammatical errors, wrong spellings, omissions and double writings. You can always ask your friend to proofread for you or read it aloud to your hearing. Remember you have to appear as perfect as possible and as an expert in your domain.

With these said, I wish you the very best of luck as you pen down your first CV or rewrite your CV to professional standard. Remember your CV speaks to an employer or recruiter even before you are summoned. So it has to speak as though you were the one sitting in front of them.

If you need help with writing a professional and winning CV to boost that your job search, you can always get to +237674542410. We are always at your service 24/7.

on how to make use of your university days

How do you make sure that you don't waste any of your school days including the hours after school, your off days and the weekends? It is not enough to just go to school and amass certificates, take advantage of every little spare time that presents itself. The job market is highly competitive and you must measure up to fit in so don't give chances. Prepare yourself while still in school so that you won't have to conceiving the idea that there are no jobs or you need someone who knows someone who knows another in order to get a job. et me teach you how;

1. Stay on the know about seminars and conferences happening in the towns in which you are based in your field or in something you are having passion about. Check , , and some personalities who are fun of organizing such informative seminars, conferences and trainings.

2. Volunteer to work for free after school, during your off days and during weekends in restaurants, supermarkets, shops, offices and many more pleasures. In offices, you can volunteer to organize and archive their documents if you are a Business Administration student, as a marketing student, you can volunteer to sell in someone's shop, or if you are offering Hospitality and Catering, you can volunteer to sell in restaurants, café, or even undertake part times in local hotels around as housekeeping attendant, bellman, waiter, waitress etc...

3. Instead of greeting everybody on social media platforms and checking latest, search for influencers in your field, network and bond with them before time. Stop making mad rushes and appearing desperate and cheap when you are done from school meanwhile you had all time to build solid relationships for yourself and be better placed before time.

4. Undertake internships during holidays. Stop being mama's boys an girls and rushing home each time to relax and sleep 13 hours a day. I am not saying you can't stay in your parents house and undertake your internships, no, I am saying make use of your life and avoid last minute rushes.

5. There are local NGOs around whose doors are always opened to accepting you to use their company and practice your theoretical knowledge. Make use of them. If you have difficulties finding where to undertake an internship be it academic or professional, get to Your Career Companion through +237 674 542 410.

6. Network with people of value. Stay connected with people who will provoke you to be at your best and see opportunities amidst challenging times. Be mentored by professionals who can lead you correctly in this journey of life, shape you for a better tomorrow and transforms your mindset in a positive way.

7. Undertake more courses and certification programs online through sites like Alison.com, Coursera, Edx, LinkedIn, read books etc.... Remember your teachers only educate you with the basics but the in-depth knowledge and proper application of the theory is 100% on you. Take up the challenge and own the driver seat of your life. Make a difference and avoid last minutes tensions and frustrations.

Too much alcohol, partying and flexing during your free times will only contribute to the frustration that will consume you immediately after school when you will be faced with the realities of life. Make use of your lives my dear future job seekers and increase your chances of landing a good job immediately after school. If some of us had the chance to to be told all these, I am sure we would have been way better since.

Let no one deceives you that with a Masters degree you stand a chance to land a better white collar job with no prior experience. Failure to prepare is preparing to embrace frustrations, embarrassments and series of rejections. Let an opportunity meet you prepared and ready for it.

If you need to take to someone about your worries, lets hear you in the comment section or Contact +237 674 542 410.
