I believe that this subject is crucially important to discuss. I am glad that there is evidence of commercials that represent women different to the “stereotypes” and “labels” that were placed. It is great that we bring up, make researches and discuss these topics of great importance in the Gender and Communication class. Therefore, I am sure that we will pay more attention to these topics and problems in our future lives, thus we are going to be able to fix them. Fortunately, the world becomes more and more open minded to all the topics that used to be under cover and undiscussed, and people become more educated.

The idea that sports is a man’s world is reinforced by the gender composition and imagery in commercials. Women almost never appear in commercials unless they are in the company of men. Although women were mostly absent from sports commentary, when they did appear it was most often in stereotypical roles as sexy, masculinity-validating props, often cheering the men on. For instance, “X-sports” on Fox Sports West used a bikini-clad blonde woman as a hostess to welcome viewers back after each commercial break as the camera moved provocatively over her body.
“In short, the Televised Sports Manhood Formula is a pedagogy through which boys are taught that paying the price, be it one’s bodily health or one’s money, gives one access to the privileges that have been historically linked to hegemonic masculinity—money, power, glory, and women. And the barrage of images of femininity as model-like beauty displayed for and in the service of successful men suggest that heterosexuality is a major lynchpin of the Televised Sports Manhood Formula, and on a larger scale serves as one of the major linking factors in the conservative gender regime of the sports/media/commercial complex” (Messner, Dunbar and Hunt 392).

Description: the commercial that I have included is called “What are girls made of?”. It stars with positioning a young girl in the center of the viewers’ perspective. She sings a song that explains what girls are made of, for instance, iron (represents strength), striving, self-dedication, battles, perseverance, grace, bruises, punches, independence, strength and etc. The song also includes the lyrics that says that the whole nation is proud of the females. Moreover, the commercial introduces the sports and the Olympic athletes (eg. Adelina Sotnikova – Figure Skating Olympic Champion 2014). The way the girls sing the song, she rose her head high up which represents pride for the women.

You're made of what you do.

I agree that some parents “plant into children’s heads that you have to be a boy/girl” as one child said in the video. However, it depends on the parents, if you are a first child, on your background and etc. My parents have never told me to be a ‘girl’. My mother has always said: “You should be strong, you shouldn’t cry, you should be more tough”, and she was more lenient to my younger brothers. I personally believe that everything relies on circumstances, but I am glad who I am now. This is my personal experience to confront the fact the difference between boys and girls. I really liked the video because at the end of its children state that girls and boys are no different, the only exception is biological difference. This topic is indirectly related to Televised Sports Manhood Formula, since this theory promotes the stereotypes of women and men in sports commercials, which later on passes on people and influences their behavior. Through my personal story I wanted to share that it the stereotypes can be broken, and women are not always the sexual objects to support men. Moreover, my personal experience also mirrors the commercials I have included above and their descriptions.

Description: this commercial shows the women’s strong side. It portraits the women both sides – the stereotypical side (cooking, hands in flour) and the strong and athletic side, when the girl turns out to be an athlete. The song of the commercial has the lyrics - “Who run the world? Girls!” which clearly highlights the power of women, as well as disagrees with the stereotypical roles as sexy, masculinity-validating props, often cheering the men on.

In the article titled “The Televised Sports Manhood Formula,” Messner, Dunbar and Hunt study televised sports shows and their accompanying commercial advertisements, the authors identify 10 recurrent themes concerning gender, race, aggression, violence, militarism, and commercialism that, together, they call the Televised Sports Manhood Formula. This formula is a master ideological narrative that is well suited to discipline boys’ bodies, minds, and consumption choices in ways that construct a masculinity that is consistent with the entrenched interests of the sports/media/commercial complex.
