LipoProfiBal06 - almost the first month of the project has passed. The program structure has its first functional unit. It was very challenging (and it is not finished yet) to get the communication and settings of the ADC - analog-to-digital converter working. A high-quality and precise type with a resolution of 24bit was used, so that its measurement accuracy was below 1mV. Communication with the Windoft program for PC was fully operational, so that it will be possible to monitor the voltage waveforms on the computer monitor. The balancer function will be practically the same as the Schulz balancer for voltage balancing. However, a function for LiHv batteries has been newly added. All settings are made via two buttons and are stored in the FRAM memory. Now the basic functional menu is ready. The battery type, number of cells manually or automatically, uart, lcd, buttons, battery control function, voltage control Umin and Umax according to the selected chemistry are already being set. Now I will have to start the PCB design itself and complete the balancing process itself. This is great news, this new active balancer will be available again soon.

How familiar is the name. But it will not be the same as what Mr. Schulze made. This new balancer with active energy transfer will be full of new features. The energy transfer performance will be controlled and managed. It will support LiHv and all older Lixx battery chemistries. Its settings will be via two buttons. This is not the final form. I am just now thinking about the functions. Control and testing processes. Cell voltage display. The first version for 2-6S Lixx batteries will be created. I already have the basic structure of the program ready. Internal FRAM memory in which some data such as settings and statistics will be stored. The OLED form may not be final. LipoProfiBal06 - yes. You see and read correctly. I started designing a new active Lixx balancer.

I had planned it before. I consider Schulz balancers to be the best ever made for modelers.

I put two basic conditions into the design. The balancer must be active with energy transfer, just like lipoprofibal 08 and 14. The second condition is sending data to the serial port and the same cooperation with the Winsoft program. So that it is still possible to display graphs on a PC.

I will try to keep the principle and connection of the active part the same.

The display LEDs will have the same function.

But I will add a new option for LiHv batteries.

If anyone has ever looked under the LipoProfiBal cover, they found a DC/DC power supply there. It serves as a source for energy transfer between cells. I will also keep it the same.

Although LipoProfiBal works great, I found one drawback. The entire balancer is powered from the battery service connector. The specified current of 1A for energy transfer per cell causes overloading of the outer wires of the service connector. Therefore, the new balancer will be fully pass-through for the battery power wires. The total current of the internal source for balancing will be 5A. This current will be newly measured and the power will be used to the maximum if necessary and divided between the cells.

The connection function with the charger will be maintained. If the service connector is connected and the cell voltage is READY, then the power wires will be connected to the charger. The protective function will be the same.

I would mention the OLED display as the best new function. It will show the voltage of the balanced cells in the same format as it is displayed on the NEXT series chargers. This will make it easy to see the difference in voltage on the cells and their actual voltage during charging.

XCAL for ISL8 is going through another phase of development. The accuracy and stability of the voltage references are important.

That's why I decided to change the reference sources with TL431 to a much more accurate way of switching voltages.

I decided to use a high-precision reference voltage source and use a DAC system coupled with an OZ with automatic calibration of the reference sources.

The 4.09600V reference source will be amplified through an operational amplifier and in a narrow band it will be set by the microprocessor to the exact output voltage value.

The entire regulation loop will be closed by a 24bit ADC, so that the accuracy of the reference voltages within a tolerance of +-0.5mV is always guaranteed.

At the same time, the set of reference voltages will be expanded to 3,000V/4,200V/8,400V/12,600V, as well as 16,800V and 30.000V. These are voltage values ​​for 4S LiPo.

Automatic calibration ensures high-quality and accurate calibration. However, the emphasis here is on the lowest voltage of 3,000V, which in my opinion is not important. I would focus mainly on the voltage multiples for the number of LiPo battery cells.

And for this very reason, I will also add 16,800 and 30,000V to XCAL, which are in the set of reference voltages.
