After studying in Berlin during her undergrad degree, Aliya Deri - who's originally from California - fell in love with the city's diversity and friendliness. For many years after finishing her degree, she's worked as a in Los Angeles’ , specialising in and , before she's found what she was looking for here at wattx: a small company with a scrappy, people-oriented culture that allows her to work on a diversity of real-world problems.

She's relocated from LA to Berlin and joined the team as a Senior Data Scientist back in November 2020. Ever since, she supports projects with , full-stack work, and project management, particularly enjoying the finding of smart data-based solutions for non-standard problems. And not to forget: she's also very good at crossword puzzles ;)

What's particularly drawn her to wattx was the incredibly smart and friendly team members: "I feel very lucky to have found a home here", she says, adding that there's a growth mindset present that's very contagious. "Everyone sees each other, as well as themselves, as limited not by their past abilities but by their future aspirations."

She recommends reading Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series (link in comments). Why? For its optimistic but still realistic depiction of future technology. Unlike a lot of science fiction, it gives her hope that technology will solve as least as many problems as it creates.

Building products from scratch that solve real customer pains in an environment that fosters personal growth and entrepreneurship is what our Manager Raphael sought and found at wattx.

After handing in his Master Thesis earlier this year and gaining some first experience in startups and venture capital, Raphael was eager to put what he had learned straight into practice. He’s joined our team in March and directly dived into various projects, supporting the cross-functional project teams with his business knowledge.

Besides , Raphael has a keen interest in . He recommends subscribing to the newsletter “Import AI”, run by Jack Clark (link to subscribe in comments). This newsletter continuously provides digestible news on the international state and interesting projects of .

Starting a new job during a global pandemic makes it harder to get to know colleagues - at least that’s what you'd think.

When Michael joined wattx as a in April 2020, he experienced wattx’ welcoming and supportive first hand. Through regular online team events he met watts on a fun basis ( ), and was especially fascinated one time, when Thomas asked for support in organising the wattx’ and ended up with enough help that nothing additional needed to be done on his end.

A a classical , Michael finished his diploma in sports sciences with the aim to begin a career in sports marketing. But, as so often with opportunities presenting themselves by chance, he was offered an internship in - and accepted it.

After 5 years of working in B2C, he yearned for change. “Beyond the desire to switch jobs and proceed working in my fields of expertise, I also wanted to get uncomfortable. Learn about other business fields, organisational setups, and project requirements”, he says, “and wattx offers all of that for me”.

Book recommendation: Limitless by John Kwik. Why? Because this book teaches methods and principles to unleash one's potential that is often suppressed by negative beliefs and habits.

We're excited to kick off our new series , where we take you and introduce you to all the wonderful who make wattx into what it is!

As you already know, our larger team consists of several disciplines - one of which is the team, led by our Head of UX, Tatiana.

In 2016, Tatiana decided to take the leap and move to Berlin, all the way from Munich, to join wattx as a Senior User Experience Designer. Before, when based in Munich, she's been working in a design agency where projects rarely saw the light of day, but rather remained conceptual - which is what drew her to us in the first place. "I was looking for a startup or company where I would be able to design and implement concrete projects and products for real customers", she says.

Although her first few months felt like constant hacking with few processes in place, she's found what she was looking for and especially enjoyed working on lots of new topics and ideas where she had to make something work.

We've come a long way since then, for sure, and are happy to have her on board to constantly question the status quo and functional and beautiful solutions for our clients.

One book Tatiana wants you to read: Anyone can design by Amid Moradganjeh (link in comments)
