And then comes one piece of information: the candidate is deaf.

Suddenly, the problem is no longer qualifications. The problem becomes the lack of an interpreter, a clear procedure, and a recruitment process prepared for this situation.

As a result, the interview may never happen at all.
Not because the candidate wasn’t good enough. Simply because the organization wasn’t ready.

In the US, 53.3% of deaf working-age adults are employed, compared with 75.8% of hearing adults, according to the National Deaf Center.

He graduated top of his class, passed the entrance exams for school, got his place. At his first anatomy lecture he sat in the front row, the best spot for reading lips. There was no interpreter. The dean's office cited budget constraints for the academic year and offered notes from classmates instead.

Notes don't capture the tone a professor uses to signal what's coming on the exam. They don't capture a question from the back of the room, answered on the fly, never written on the board. Six years of medical school become six years of gaps like this, quietly stacking up until they show up in exam results instead of knowledge.

The scale of this isn't marginal or local. In Ireland, deaf people are nearly ten times less likely to obtain a third-level qualification than hearing people, according to data cited by AHEAD, an organization supporting students with disabilities (based on CSO, Leeson 2012).

In the US, only 5% of deaf people enroll in postsecondary education, versus 9.9% of people, and 22% of deaf adults complete a bachelor's degree, according to the National Deaf Center.

In the UK, part of the problem is the funding mechanism itself: the Disabled Students' Allowance, a grant covering interpreter costs at , has an upper cap that often falls short of real sign interpreter rates, leaving the university or the student to cover the gap.

Interpreter access at universities still depends too often on whether it fits this year's budget, not on whether it's a student's right. This candidate's competence was never the problem.

On June 28th, 2025, a law came into effect that was supposed to change everything for millions of deaf people in Europe.

A year has passed. The regulation changed. Reality? Much less so.

The European Accessibility obliged banks, e-commerce, transport, media, and telecommunication services to ensure full accessibility for people with disabilities. Under the threat of penalties of up to 10 percent of annual turnover, and exclusion from public tenders.

Sounds serious? It is serious.

But there is something rarely talked about. The told companies what they must do. It didn't tell them how.

Most hearing people assume that sign language is universal, a single language understood by Deaf communities around the world.

A Deaf person from Poland cannot naturally communicate with a Deaf person from the United States or the United Kingdom. Polish Sign Language ( ) and American Sign Language ( ) are entirely distinct linguistic systems, each with their own grammar, spatial structure, and unique linguistic dynamics.

But for deaf people? It is a luxury that too often requires the presence of an interpreter, sacrificing privacy, and dealing with immense stress.
That is why at VinSpeak, we took it a step further.
