The XQ1 mini had its world debut at the opening of the Application Center for AI and Quantum Computing, "Q and AI", at Bertramshof in Frankfurt, a landmark day that brought together 400+ leaders from politics, industry, and science, inaugurated by Ministerpräsident Boris Rhein and Digitalministerin Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus.

The most compact real quantum computer in the world for the power it packs, room temperature, standard power outlet, operational in under five minutes.

Florian Frank gave a live demo of the XQ1 mini to Digitalministerin Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, who recalled the unveiling of the Baby Diamond at Goethe University and was glad to see the next version unveiled in Frankfurt. Jason Kushal Choudhury and Manpreet Jattana from Goethe University Frankfurt carried the demonstrations forward, showcasing the XQ1 mini to dignitaries and deep-tech visitors throughout the day.

Our CEO, Gopi Balasubramanian, said, "The event, start to finish, was remarkable. Academia, industry, investors, and politics in the same room, working toward the same goal, bringing quantum into the real world."

Qubits are fragile. Noise, heat, and stray electromagnetic fields all push them toward errors.

The challenge: how do you check for mistakes without collapsing the quantum state you're trying to protect?

The answer is quantum error correction. Entanglement across multiple physical qubits lets you detect errors indirectly. Think of it as a majority vote: if most qubits agree on a state, the outlier is the error.

This is why the path from today's processors to large-scale quantum computers runs directly through error correction. It's not optional. It's the foundation.

Headlines love big qubit numbers. 1,000 qubits. 100,000 qubits. A million qubits.

But there's a critical distinction that rarely makes the headlines: physical qubits vs logical qubits.

Physical qubits are the raw hardware. Logical qubits are error-corrected, reliable units of computation. It can take hundreds or even thousands of physical qubits working together through error correction to produce a single logical qubit that's actually trustworthy for an algorithm.

A system with fewer, high-quality, well-controlled physical qubits can outperform a system with ten times more noisy ones.

This is why coherence time, gate fidelity, and error correction matter as much as, often more than, the qubit count alone.

Range tends to top this list, and the reasoning holds.

Photon loss over fibre is a fundamental physics problem, not an engineering one you can simply spend your way out of. Quantum repeaters are the long-term answer, but they are themselves an unsolved hardware challenge.

Hardware integration is the more immediate bottleneck for most organisations trying to deploy QKD today. The mismatch between quantum optical channels and classical IP networks is real and underestimated.

Cost will follow once the other two are solved. It always does.

NV centres in diamond have a role to play here too. The same spin-photon interface that gives XQ1 its readout capability is relevant to quantum network nodes and repeater architectures.

Classical encryption relies on maths problems that are hard to solve. Quantum computers, at scale, could solve some of them.

Quantum key distribution uses the laws of physics instead of mathematical difficulty. Any eavesdropper disturbs the quantum state and is immediately detectable. The security is not assumed. It is physical.

But QKD is not widely deployed yet. Three barriers are slowing it down.

Rank them from hardest to crack (1) to most tractable (3):

A: Key distribution range. Photon loss in fibre limits how far QKD works without a trusted relay.

B: Hardware integration. Quantum channels and classical networks require entirely different infrastructure.

C: Cost and access. Deploying QKD outside of government and finance is still economically difficult.

Most people picture quantum computers as towering cryogenic machines chilled to near absolute zero.

NV centres in diamond work differently.

A nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre is simply a nitrogen atom sitting next to a missing carbon atom in a diamond lattice. This defect traps electrons whose spin states, "up" or "down", become the 0 and 1 of a qubit.

Because the diamond lattice isolates these spins so well from environmental noise, NV centres stay coherent at room temperature. No dilution refrigerators. No liquid helium. Just a diamond, a laser, and a microwave pulse.

This is the physics behind XQ1.
