“But my handwriting is terrible”
– I heard that from someone when I told her about my upcoming calligraphy workshop.

Do you think my handwriting is beautiful?
It is not.
But I have learned to write in a certain way, which we call modern calligraphy.

Calligraphy is not about getting a beautiful handwriting.
It is about excluding the noise of the outside world: Forgetting everything about work, duties and plans.
You will concentrate on one single thing: the paper in front of you and your arm movement.
It is about finding your own rhythm and following it with your pen.

We will start with warming up and simple exercises. Then, we will add a little at a time, so that it gradually turns into letters.
Your first couple of sheets may not be beautiful. But your hand writing will get nicer with each line.

I cannot guarantee that you will get a beautiful handwriting. But if you focus on it, and are willing to practice, it will get more and more beautiful.

Ps. If you focus too much on the shape of the letters, you will make a spelling mistake for sure at some point.😅

I am going to run a workshop in modern calligraphy on September 12, 2026:

Create your own greeting card

Would you like to learn modern calligraphy and at the same time immerse yourself in a creative activity that gives you the experience of peace and presence? At this workshop at FOF Aalborg, you will receive a thorough introduction to the beautiful universe of modern calligraphy, where you will learn to write elegant letters with pen and ink.

Calligraphy means "the art of writing beautifully", and through simple exercises you will gain insight into the basic techniques so that you can create beautiful handwritten cards, invitations and personal greetings.

Learn the basic techniques in modern calligraphy
We start by getting to know the pointed nib pen and work with exercises that provide a natural rhythm between the characteristic thin and thick strokes. Then we practice to understand the structure of the letters and learn how the individual letters are connected to harmonious words and sentences.

There are many ways to write, and along the way you will have the opportunity to experiment and develop your very own calligraphic style.

A creative workshop with peace and contemplation
Whether you are a beginner or already have experience with calligraphy, you will experience the peace that comes, when you are focused on the movements of the pen on the paper.

The workshop not only provides new creative skills - you also become more aware of the structure of the letters, their shapes and the small details that surround you in everyday life. Many people find working with calligraphy relaxing and almost meditative.

At the workshop you will get:

- Teaching and personal guidance in modern calligraphy.

- Introduction to pointed nib pen and ink.

- Exercises that help you master the shapes and connections of the letters.

- Inspiring and relaxing hours in a creative bubble.

- Templates and practice sheets so you can easily continue at home.

At the end of the workshop, you will take home your own handmade calligraphic greeting card – ready to delight someone, you love or to decorate your own home.

Why should you practice calligraphy?

Because it is the most human thing you can do.

Holding a pen in your hand, dipping it in black ink and writing letters on paper has been part of humanity for many years. And it continues to be.

We all need to sit down, block out noise and focus on one thing at a time. This time on a piece of paper in front of us.

The writing process is calming. You cannot write beautifully, if you are nervous and distracted. You have to slow down, straighten your back, and find the rhythm in your breathing.

I will give you an introduction, show you some tips and tricks along the way, and you will learn at your own pace.

The result will be beautiful and personal letters, perfectly imperfect.

You will take some sheets and beautiful cards home and will get surprised by how good you actually are at calligraphy.

The first workshop will already take place on Saturday, September 12th.

2. Do one.
3. Teach one.

These are the three phases of acquiring new skills.

Now I'm ready for the third one.

I first met calligraphy and lettering – writing and drawing letters – when I studied visual communication at the university. Over the years, it has been on and off alongside my regular graphic work.

Then, during the last 5 years I have mostly focused on the craftsmanship of typography, and I love it.
You can tell a story by shaping the letters!

Now I'm ready to share my passion with the world. I am teaching modern calligraphy and lettering and holding 3 workshops at FOF Aalborg. I'm really looking forward to it!

Fight like a girl
– I heard it from a woman.

She has a child with special needs, and that is why she chose to work as a solopreneur therapist.

This lettering piece is a tribute to her and all the cool fighters who have chosen the precarious independent life. A life where you don’t necessarily work less, but where you can decide your own working hours and be there for your child, who needs extra care and attention.
You have to fight hard like a fierce for the best conditions for your child and at the same time, you have to be soft and gentle with your child.

I painted the word “Fight” with a rough, flat, semi-dry brush on paper and scanned it in.
The text “like a girl” is based on my handwriting with a pointed nib pen and then vectorized in Adobe Illustrator. Just like the flourishes, that frame the text around – although not with the usual soft, round shapes this time, but with a more expressive stroke.
Finally, I added colors and effects.

It is ready to be printed.
It could hang on the wall in her waiting room as a poster, or lie on the table as a card.

She, the fighter, once told me that she would probably never be my client. She may be right.
But her story touched me, and that's why I did this lettering piece with her in mind.

Lykke – happiness

Self-initiated project, a lettering exercise

I passed by a shop the other day. The sign said LYKKE, on a black background with white letters.

It was neutral and said nothing about what you would experience by shopping there and certainly not, what LYKKE feels like.

“LYKKE” looks different for me: it is filled with emotions, lots of joy. Not necessarily the “let’s-have-a-crazy-party” type of joy, but a quiet, smiling joy that you feel when, for example, you have found the perfect beach sandals for your lovely summer dress in a fashion store.

Lettering can show emotions and tell stories. You don’t always have to use the same neutral sans serif font and stick to black and white. Letters, created from scratch, spiced with a little color, can say a lot. They can also tell a story about happiness (what the word “LYKKE” means in Danish). That’s why I just did my own version of “happiness.”

You can spend hours searching for the right font, or you can choose to get custom lettering.

This logo was designed for a dressmaker who creates tailor-made clothes with lots of love. This required custom-made, handwritten letters.

I started with hand sketches of script letters with pen on paper. Then, I fine-tuned it. Finally, I made a vector file in Adobe Illustrator.

Earlier, I did a Winter, Spring and Summer mobil cover image by using modern calligraphy.
So why not to create one for Autumn too, in the same style?

I started by doing calligraphy with a pointed nib pen and ink on paper. I took a photo of the piece and opened it in Photoshop. I found some old photos of Autumn leaves in my archive, and used them as a background - with some modifications.

This will be my mobile cover image for the Autumn.
