The most common word we heard at wasn't "security" โ€“ it was "resilience".

The agenda spanned AI, ransomware, supply chain security, IAM, NIS2, incident response, and cyber resilience.

But many of the conversations came back to the same question:

"How do we keep operating when something goes wrong?"

That's where discussions around third-party access, supply chain security, operational resilience, and governance start to connect.

The technologies, frameworks, and priorities may differ, but many organizations are trying to solve the same problem: strengthening security while keeping critical operations running.

It was also a reminder that OT cybersecurity is ultimately an operational challenge. Success depends not only on technology, but on finding practical ways to balance security, compliance, and operational continuity.

Thanks to everyone we met in Milan last week โ€“ looking forward to next year's edition! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

"Once you're inside the network, you're trusted."

That's the assumption OT environments have relied on for years.

It made sense when systems were isolated and access was limited.

But today, industrial environments are more connected than ever โ€“ and "inside the network" doesn't mean what it used to.

That's why more organizations are adopting ๐—ญ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜. To make sure access is intentional. ๐Ÿ”’

So that every connection is verified, every access request has a purpose, and every user only gets access to what they actually need. ๐Ÿ”Œ

Because in OT, access equals impact.

๐ŸŽž๏ธ In this episode of ๐—ข๐—ง ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ, we explain what Zero Trust means in practical OT terms and why it has become a foundational approach to securing modern industrial environments.

Do you combine legacy PLCs, HMIs, and modern automation โ€“ all while growing external connectivity? That complexity demands control.

But when remote access is built on layered VPNs, IT-first tools, and vendor-specific solutions, control starts to break down.

Production environments were not designed for IT-style access models. ๐Ÿญ

There is a better way. One that matches how OT systems actually operate.

Here's how we do it at Secomea for food and beverage production environments ๐Ÿ‘‡

One infected vendor laptop shouldn't be able to reach your entire production environment.

But in a flat OT network, that's often the reality.

A single compromise can move from one system to another, affecting production lines, critical assets, and sometimes entire sites.

By creating boundaries between systems and controlling how traffic moves across the environment, organizations can contain incidents before they become operational disruptions. ๐Ÿ”’

Users and devices only get access to what they actually need, making it much harder for threats to spread.

The principle is simple: if a problem starts in one area of the network, it should stay there. โ›”

That's true whether the issue is malware, unauthorized access, a compromised vendor device, or a simple human mistake.

๐ŸŽž๏ธ Watch our latest episode of ๐—ข๐—ง ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ to see why network segmentation remains one of the most effective ways to protect industrial operations.

The 2026 State of Industrial Remote Access Report โ€“ Europe Edition revealed that

- only 43% of industrial organizations have full vendor session auditability
- only 17% operate with high-frequency credential lifecycle discipline
- 38% experienced a remote access-related incident in the past 12 months

European industrial organizations are not moving along a single maturity curve.
They are separating into structural clusters.

NIS2, CRA, NIST CSF, Zero Trust principles...

Many treat them as separate initiatives.
In practice, they overlap more than most teams realize.

Look closely at the requirements, and you'll see the same work showing up in different forms.
The objectives are largely the same. The controls too โ€“ just framed differently.

Without a way to connect them, teams end up interpreting and implementing those controls multiple times.

The work runs in parallel across compliance, IT, OT, and product teams, without a shared structure.
That's where duplication creeps in.

In this month's edition of ๐’๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐š ๐‘ช๐’๐’๐’๐’†๐’„๐’•, we look at how to bring these efforts together using IEC 62443 as a common structure.

Stop managing frameworks in parallel.
Make them work together.

You'll get more aligned teams in the process, too.

There's a point where every OT security strategy gets tested: not during an audit, but during a real incident, a late-night support request, or a vendor needing urgent access.

That's usually where the gaps show up. โš ๏ธ

We'll be at the SANS Institute ๐—œ๐—–๐—ฆ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒ in Orlando in 2 weeks to stay close to those real-world discussions. ๐Ÿ“

This is one of the few places where the conversations stay grounded in reality:
โ€ข how remote access is actually being used in plants and critical infrastructure
โ€ข where existing setups break down under pressure
โ€ข how teams are handling vendor access, segmentation, and compliance in practice

No theory-heavy frameworks detached from operations. Just people comparing what works, what doesn't, and what they're changing.

Automotive plants run systems that operate in tightly coordinated workflows. Unplanned downtime can impact output, spreading across suppliers and vehicle programs.

VPN tunnels, supplier-installed tools, and inconsistent plant-level policies introduce broad network exposure.

These environments demand precision. Your remote access solution needs to match that.

Why do tools designed for IT connectivity fail when extended to OT networks?

1. High availability leaves no room for instability โ€“ even short downtime means product waste and missed deliveries.

2. Multiple OEMs and service partners require access, making governance hard to standardize across plants.

3. Legacy OT equipment was not built for modern cybersecurity; agent-based and IT-style approaches can impact performance.

Rather than moving toward a new OT remote access model, North America is refining an existing one.

Our data, collected from 170+ organizations, shows that 3 in 4 prefer or already use a standardized vendor access platform.

Identity-based controls are widely adopted, but unevenly applied.

The shift towards

- fewer access paths
- more standardization
- more consistent identity enforcement

is whatโ€™s defining the next phase of OT remote access maturity in the region. ๐ŸŒŽ
