Storytelling: How a pilot project in Stadt Stralsund made overflowing bins a thing of the past 🗑️📡

Let's rewind to the beginning: Stadt Stralsund was one of the first BrainyBins® projects in Germany — so here's a look back at the pilot phase!

As part of a smart-city pilot, the city equipped 35 public waste bins in its historic old town with BrainyBins® radar sensors. The sensors measure fill levels and signal the exact moment a bin actually needs emptying — no guesswork, no fixed calendar dates anymore.
And just after just a few months, the numbers spoke for themselves:

✅ 71% fewer emptyings (down from 1,548 to 445 per week)
✅ 54% fewer kilometres driven
✅ 30% less working time – freed up for other tasks

Instead of emptying twice a week on a fixed schedule, bins are now emptied only when they're truly full. Fewer trips, less diesel, less CO₂ – and the smartest route delivered straight to a tablet.

Stralsund's verdict? A "technical marvel" – and a clear go-ahead to continue the project and roll out with even more sensors! 🚛♻️

Storytelling: From 380 ⬇️230 - Less Really Is More!

How do you track waste collection across hundreds of bins over 38.8 km²? 🗑️

Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality found the answer together with our BrainyBins. Around 230 bins are now emptied on demand. It takes just one employee for on-site emptying and one for admin support. How did Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality get there?

🚀 2021/22: The project kicked off with a municipal preparation phase by taking various measures before the main phase began.

📊In 2023/24, together we installed sensors, collected and analysed data, and fine-tuned the system. The following year, BrainyBins went into full operation.

We also integrated Mr. Fill compression bins via API, with locations fetched automatically straight from their interface. In Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality the data showed bins along the pedestrian street filling far faster than the rest of the network. Adding Mr. Fill compression bins at these spot, folded into our route planning, keeps the street clean while running an efficient route.

The result? Around 380 partly unused bins were reduced to about 230 regularly used ones. Less driving, more clarity, visible on the digital route-planning map: full yellow-and-red bins quickly turn green as they're emptied. 🚛

Two days in Copenhagen: From waste-to-energy to smart bins

Last Thursday and Friday, the Verband kommunaler Unternehmen e.V. (VKU) visited Copenhagen and together with Cirkulær Danmark we were happy to join them.

A great exchange all around, here a few highlights:

🌱Insights into Denmark's waste and recycling development
🚛 Visits to two recycling stations
🗑️ And a special one: seeing our BrainyBins live in action during a system demo in the municipality of Lyngby-Taarbæk Kommune

It was a great reminder of how modern waste management and circular thinking come together. We headed home with plenty of takeaways and a great thanks to everyone involved!🙌
