Assiut Microfluidics Lab

Assiut Microfluidics Lab AML is a Research group interested in microfluidics, under the leadership of Dr. Mohamed Omar Abdelgawad
Assiut University

Assiut Microfluidics Lab (AML) is a research laboratory at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Assiut University, Egypt. Our research interests lie in the area of microfluidics and its applications. Microfluidics is a new technology pertaining to liquid manipulation on the micron-size scale. It emerged in the early 1990’s originally to enhance the analytical performance of chemical systems,

but was later found to offer a whole set of advantages resulting in its adoption in many fields including biological analysis, chemical synthesis, electronics cooling, optics, and even information technology. Now, less than twenty years after its inception, microfluidics is at the core of a whole new technology, known as “Lab-on-a-Chip”, that made possible, on palm sized devices, processes that conventionally required bench-size equipment. A few examples of these processes include DNA amplification (PCR), High Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLC), and immunoassays. Some of our current research projects:
Studying contact angle saturation in electrowetting
Modeling droplet actuation in digital microfluidics
Low cost digital microfluidics for exploratory research and educational purposes
Building a microfluidic chip to determine mechanical properties of biological cells
