Current Wi-Fi technology is reaching its limits and is only suited for short-to-medium ranges with relatively small amounts of bandwidth. Regular Wi-Fi operates at 2.4 GHz and has a small number of channels with only three that don't
overlap (four in Europe). The high frequency allows for more channels in a smaller slice of the spectrum (84.5 MHz); however, the biggest disadvantage of operating at
this frequency is the limited range, which is typically 32 meters indoors and 95 meters outdoors, and which can be extended in some circumstances using specialized
equipment. These are enough for crowded city locations but don't provide a real alternative for long-range connections. Wi-Fi style networks with a longer range could become a reality in some areas of the globe as new, intelligent technologies are brought into local area networks to enable them to share spectrum with other users. As the digital dividend opens up new spaces in spectrum formerly occupied by television, opportunities will arise for these spaces to be
shared for other services, including Wi-Fi and broadband services. Since Wi-Fi may be using these ‘white spaces’ in the television spectrum, they have been dubbed White-Fi solution. Market in Egypt today does not have this solution for communicating over Wi-Fi, so we will aims to be the first team that provides this solution in the Egyptian market. We are targeting all markets and branches which need wireless broadband Internet coverage, such as Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs), petroleum companies, and airports. This solution will add a lot of benefits to the ICT market, as it will be used widely and it will profit a huge amount of income, also it is a new technology which provides a new wide competition between companies for leading this technology, which will also, provides technological development to keep pace with this new technology. And it will
also change the industry of computers and devices which will use this technology instead of the old one. To acheive our goal of this project “White-Fi System”, we will need to be aware of a number of research components as: Cognitive Radio (CR), Software Defined Radio (SDR), wireless technologies, TV White spaces (TVWS) sensing algorithms. All of these are integrated together to implement and provide the white-Fi solution for the Egyptian market.
