Understanding the Power of URL Optimization in SEO

Are you looking to fine-tune your website's performance in search engines? Let's dive into a fundamental aspect of SEO that often gets overlooked – URL optimization.

🔍 What is URL Optimization in SEO?

URL optimization plays a pivotal role in shaping your website's visibility and user experience. It's not just about creating a web address; it's about crafting a digital pathway that search engines and users can easily navigate and comprehend.

🎯 Why Does It Matter?

Optimized URLs are descriptive, concise, and relevant. They serve as signposts, guiding both search engines and users toward your content. A well-structured URL containing relevant keywords can significantly impact your site's ranking in search engine results.

📝 Key Strategies for Effective URL Optimization:

Descriptive & Clear: Create URLs that succinctly describe the content of the page.
Keyword Integration: Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your URL structure.
Hyphens & Readability: Use hyphens to separate words for better readability.
Avoid Dynamic Parameters: Strive for clean, static URLs without excessive parameters.
Consistency & Structure: Maintain a consistent URL structure throughout your site.

🚀 Benefits of Optimized URLs:

Improved search engine visibility
Enhanced user experience and navigation
Increased click-through rates
Better indexing of your content

🌟 Takeaway:

URL optimization might seem like a small piece of the SEO puzzle, but its impact is substantial. By paying attention to your URLs and ensuring they're optimized for both search engines and users, you pave the way for improved rankings and a more engaging website.

SEO content tip is guaranteed to improve your rankings.

How to use The Underdog Strategy:

When creating a new piece of content, you search the target keyword in Google. You open the top result from a big site.

You create a content brief and base your strategy off it.

After all, it's ranking first, makes sense to analyze it, right?

The problem? You likely don't have their authority. If you published the same article, it wouldn't rank as well.

Instead, use The Underdog Strategy.

Locate the smallest, least authoritative site on the SERPs and analyze them instead (see image)

Find the small fish that are somehow ranking amongst giant websites.

Analyze...

1. Their entire site: what pages do they have that provide topical authority and relevance signals?

2. Their links: do they have more specific, better links to that grouping of topics than you, even if it's a smaller site? They might have more topically relevant links to this key area than others.

3. EEAT: where do they have links, interviews, mentions, podcasts?

4. The page: what exists on that piece of content that does not on yours?

5. SERP history: finally, analyze SERP history. How long have they been ranking for this term?

One of the biggest levers in content strategy for SEO is identifying what small websites are doing well enough to rank amongst big websites.

Then, create better content, adjust pages on your site, build topical authority, and hammer it home with high authority links. Guarantee you'll outrank them.

SEO TIP!

Do not rely on canonical tags (self referencing).

Canonical tags are a DIRECTIVE - instructional, Google does not arbritarily follow URL preference - that's why Google can chose another canonical path over the one it finds.

what's the point of a canonical?

Canonicals were intended as a solution for preventing things such as duplicate content as a LAST RESORT - basically, the directive was introduced so that websites with heavy structural limitations i.e. CMS level limitations had an alternate solution.

Self referencing canonical tags are fine to a degree - but, you should still ensure that:

👉 Your website ENFORCES consistent paths i.e. trailing slash vs non trailing slash

👉 You have consistent paths for HTTPS / NON WWW / WWW - depending on what configuration your website uses

👉 Your website does not return HTTP 200 for variant URLS i.e. mywebsite.com/hello mywebsite.com/hello/ < in this scenario 2 of the same pages exist but are indepent with a trailing slash - therefore a canonical fall back would be applied

👉 Do NOT canonicalise pagination series to root pagination - if the page content is different do not canonicalise one URL to another

👉 Do NOT rely on canonical tags for dynamic URL paths - if the dynamic URL path changes the content - then the canonical tag is attributing pages with different content to one another - instead, use robots to control parameter indexing (use static paths)

Look in your search console > page indexing data now to see if you can see:

❌Duplicate, Google Chose Different Canonical than User

^ This means that Google has ignored the canonical directive and chosen something else.

You should also try to minimise where possible:

❌ Alternate page with proper canonical tag

Whilst not generally a massive issue - it means Google is crawling content that it doesn't really need to - indexing control is ideal here to reduce the volume of URLS being crawled that are effectively canonical child paths

Heads-up: Google has now completely rolled out both the Dec 2022 Link Spam Update and the Dec 2022 Helpful Content Update.

Now would be a good time to review your rankings to see if there's been a noticeable change to the visibility of your site

✅ How to easily visualise the 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 of any given site

👉 This works extremely well with pitches, or when speaking with non-technical people.

The process below 👇

✔️ Crawl the site with (in the example I used 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮 𝗨𝗞, as they are a well know coffee brand in GB with a small site). ScreamingFrog is free to use for up to 400 URLs.

✔️ Once the crawl is finished, click on the top menu "Visualisations" and then on the drop-down menu select > "Force-Directed Crawl Diagram".

✔️ This will generate a graph, which will resemble the one in the screenshot below.

𝗙𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀:

👉 The red nodes/dots provide an immediate visual representation of potential issues within the site (In the example, we can see how the "store safety" category has quite a few red nodes, with potential 404 or redirection issues).

👉 The dark green nodes/dots indicate the main categories and/or verticals within a site (In our Costa crawl, few examples of this would be "Nutrition", "History" or "Costa Club").

👉 This is not on the screenshot, but if you hover over any of the nodes, you will get a detailed pop-up indicating the URL path, server response, key metadata, word count and link metrics. Really love the functionality!

This process works really if you want to get a 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁: you'll still need to download your crawl if you need to work on your technical SEO.

Unlock 250+ new backlinks without spending a dime.

The secret glossary method exposed!

For us this method built 249 backlinks on autopilot!

Steal this method, you will thank yourself later.

Here's how it worked out for one client.

In our strategy sprint, we identified around 300 questions and definitions people look up online.

Example:
"what is ..." or
"define ...." or
"definition vs definition"

Then we listed them in our content workbook for our client to approve or deny.

Once we got approval for each article, we started working on the content briefs.

The mother article has:
- 252 terms explained
- 10,000 words

For each glossary child article we made sure of this:

1. Meta Title under 65 chars.
2. Meta Desc under 155 chars.
3. Content length: 20% more words than top 3 of main KW
4. Include 1 picture for each 350 words
5. Include CTAs to product every 4 paragraphs
6. Link internally to mother glossary
7. Link internally to other glossary terms
8. Link externally to 4+ sources for credibility
9. Include at least 2 tables for readability
10. Add at least 3 lists for readability & usefulness
11. Add at least 3 bullet points for readability & usefulness
12. Cite at least 3 credible sources / authors for expertise
13. Have a table of contents on top of each article
14. Link table of contents to each h2/h3

Then we hit publish.

Then I used my rapid indexing service to get the sites crawled immediately.

Then 12 hours later, the glossary pages were indexed.

After 3 weeks, traffic started to grow.

After 1 month, backlinks started coming in.

Glossary stats today:
- 249 backlinks total
- 150 domain backlinks
- 1,600 monthly visitors
- 978 keywords rankings
- 20 child pages published
- 190 keywords ranking on page one
- $800 USD in ad costs saved per month

If this keeps going, they'll get around 20,000 visitors a year.
And save around $9,600 USD a year on ads.

Note:

We get those results without(!) paying for any backlinks.

We only published content that answers questions.

Thus we also satisfied Google's new EEAT guidelines.

So, this method might just be Google update proof.

What I want to do different next time around?
- have internal experts provide useful actionable quotes
- show their images
- link to their social pages
- use chatGPT to ask: "what angle did I miss?". Then improve the content further

So what are you waiting for?

Every day, people use Google to find answers.

To stay on people's minds, you have to publish content!
