FYI for gamers running Windows 10 with Nvidia hardware...

An unwelcome moment is approaching for die-hard Windows 10 gamers. Nvidia's previously announced move to stop issuing new GeForce Game Ready drivers for the OS takes effect after October, limiting its support to quarterly security releases and critical bug fixes.

The cutoff comes one year after Microsoft officially retired Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Nvidia granted the aging operating system an extra 12 months of full Game Ready and Studio Driver coverage, allowing owners of supported GeForce cards to continue receiving optimizations for new games.

Team Green says the final Windows 10-compatible Game Ready driver will arrive in October 2026, while the first release to exclude the OS is scheduled for November.

Existing drivers and games won't suddenly stop working once November arrives, but Windows 10 users will no longer receive the regular performance tuning, compatibility profiles, feature additions, and fixes accompanying major releases.

Over time, new titles may run less reliably or miss improvements available to otherwise identical Windows 11 systems.

Nvidia isn't abandoning Windows 10 entirely, at least not yet. Following the final full driver release, it plans to publish quarterly security updates through October 2029. Those should address critical vulnerabilities and serious bugs.

Just as Nvidia prepares to move away from Windows 10, Microsoft has extended its consumer Extended Security Updates program for another year. Enrolled Windows 10 PCs can now receive critical and important operating-system patches until October 12, 2027, although normal feature updates and technical support ended last year.

FYI for Google Chrome users...

Google is speeding up Chrome's update cycle as AI tools uncover a growing number of security flaws in the browser's code. Chrome versions 149 and 150, released within weeks of each other, carried a combined 1,072 bug fixes, more than the previous 23 versions delivered combined, reflecting how quickly AI-driven analysis is surfacing issues.

These tools are scanning code at a scale and speed that were not previously possible. In at least one case, the technology exposed a flaw that had remained in Chrome for 13 years. If exploited, the bug could have allowed attackers to bypass the browser's sandbox protections and access local files.

The rapid pace of discovery is forcing Google to rethink how it delivers updates. The company has already shortened its release cycle to every two weeks, but it is now testing an even faster model that could push updates out twice a week. The goal is to reduce the time between identifying a vulnerability and getting a fix into users' hands.

The same AI capabilities helping Google find bugs could also be used by attackers to locate weaknesses just as quickly. Faster patching is one way to limit that risk.

But releasing updates more often creates another problem: users do not always install them right away. Chrome typically downloads updates in the background, but it still depends on a browser restart to complete installation. Many users delay that step, leaving systems exposed longer than intended.

Google is starting to address that issue. In Chrome 150 on macOS, the browser can now update itself when all windows are closed, but the app is still running in the background. The company calls this a "zero window restart." When the user opens Chrome again, the update has already been applied, avoiding the need for a manual restart in many cases.

Google is also working on a more advanced approach known as "dynamic patching." This would allow updates to be applied without any restart at all. Google has not provided details on when that capability might be ready, but it says it is continuing to invest in the effort.

The increase in AI-driven vulnerability detection is unlikely to slow down. As those tools become more capable, the pressure to respond quickly will only grow, which may be why Google is moving to a different model for browser security. Rather than relying on periodic updates that require user action, Chrome is moving toward a system in which fixes are delivered continuously and with little or no disruption.

A new study by the Consumer Federation of America is once again reminding everyone that internet users are losing significant amounts of money to online scams. In fact, the losses are so substantial that the "official" figures provided by the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center significantly underestimate the true damage inflicted on the US economy.

CFA's report contains several interesting figures about online crime and the people affected by it. More than half of all reported losses are related to cryptocurrency-based fraud, a figure that is 21.9% higher than in 2024. IC3 data reports $11.4 billion in crypto-related losses, while CFA estimates that the true cost could exceed $80 billion.

Senior internet users (those aged 60 or older) are the most common targets of online scammers, accounting for 60% of reported losses, while the under-20 age group appears to be much safer – at least for now. However, younger internet users saw a massive 198% increase in reported losses in 2025 compared with 2024.

CFA identified Meta-owned social networks as the most popular platforms abused by scammers to find and target victims. In particular, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp allegedly account for 57%, 22%, and 8% of all reported fraud cases, respectively.

The consumer organization also highlighted how generative AI services are making scams easier to organize and execute. The FBI began tracking "AI-enabled" crime cases in 2025, recording $893 million in reported losses. By applying its 7.1x multiplier, CFA estimates that the total cost associated with fake voice messages, fake videos, and other AI-generated scams could instead reach $6.3 billion.
