There is a heartbreaking reality happening right now: despite Japan seeing record tourism numbers, its traditional craft businesses are slowly vanishing. Suki is a platform designed to change this, bringing Japan's regional cultures into everyday life and supporting the local craftsmen shaping new culture.
When crafting Suki's digital environment, our approach embraced a refined editorial sensibility. We wanted the brand to feel sophisticated, calm, and international—inspired more by cultural institutions, independent magazines, and luxury fashion houses than typical travel sites. It sets a tone of understated luxury, aligning with an audience that values detail, slow rhythms, and authenticity.
The Suki wordmark builds presence through simplicity and precision. Its sculpted letterforms strike a balance between warmth and structure, inviting trust without shouting. Our broader typographic system pairs an expressive serif with a clean sans-serif, acting as the central voice of the brand while balancing timeless elegance with modern clarity.
Each layout acts as a quiet frame designed to honor the hands and faces behind the craft. The compositions remain deliberate and spacious, allowing the subject to breathe. This is supported by a color system rooted in a strong monochrome foundation of Kokuen Black and Kozo White , elevated by place-based palettes extracted directly from photographs of real Japanese landscapes and crafted textures.
Even our motion design was guided by traditional philosophies like Kaizen, Ikigai, and Tamashii. We ensured that every movement on the platform feels alive, tactile, and human.
In every aspect, the design intentionally steps back, giving presence to texture, expression, and gaze. Designing Suki was an exercise in deep respect for tradition, placing the human story at the heart of every piece. We are incredibly proud to have helped bring this vision to life.
