# Danalock V3 by SALTO – After almost 6 Months of Testing: Finally, a Smart Lock I Can Trust

Over the years, I have tried quite a few electronic door locks.
Some were cheap. Others looked impressive on paper. Many came with long lists of “smart” features.
But when an electronic lock is fitted to the main entrance of your home, there are a few things that matter far more than an impressive feature list:
**It has to work. Every single time.**
It needs enough power to operate a proper security lock. The batteries should not require constant attention. It must be difficult to manipulate, and ideally it should be compatible with the existing door without requiring major modifications.
After several less successful experiences with other electronic locks, I installed a **Danalock V3 by SALTO** around six months ago.
So far, the conclusion is very simple:
**It is the best retrofit smart lock I have tested.**
# # Installation: surprisingly straightforward
One of the major advantages of Danalock is that the motor and electronics are mounted on the **inside of the door**.
On European doors, the Danalock V3 can be installed together with a compatible Euro-profile cylinder, normally without drilling or making major alterations to the door itself.
In my case, the existing cylinder had to be replaced.
Initially, I considered that a small disadvantage. In practice, however, it turned out to be the opposite. The replacement cylinder supplied with my installation was a better and more secure cylinder than the one already fitted to the door.
The mechanical installation itself was straightforward, and setting up the Danalock app was equally quick.
No lost weekend involving manuals, YouTube videos and increasingly creative vocabulary.
That is always a good start.
# # Most importantly: the motor is actually powerful enough
This is one area where several smart locks have disappointed me.
A properly secured entrance door is very different from the lightweight demonstration doors on which many electronic locks appear to have been designed.
If a lock has to operate a substantial locking mechanism, or work against some mechanical resistance, the motor needs enough torque to do the job reliably.
My Danalock has now been operating my own secured entrance door for approximately six months.
During that time I have had:
**Zero failed locking attempts.
Zero failed unlocking attempts.**
For me, that matters considerably more than having another 25 clever features in an app.
# # Battery performance is exceptionally good
The Danalock V3 uses four CR123A lithium batteries.
SALTO/Danalock specifies an average battery life of approximately **12 months**, depending on usage.
After around six months, my lock is still reporting:
**98% battery remaining.**
Battery indicators in electronic devices are not necessarily linear, so 98% after six months obviously does not mean we can simply extrapolate that figure and expect the batteries to last for years.
But it does tell me something important:
**Power consumption has so far been extremely low.**
That is a very noticeable improvement compared with several electronic locks I have used in the past.
# # Security has clearly been taken seriously
An electronic lock should not simply be convenient.
First and foremost, it still has to be a **lock**.
Danalock V3 uses **AES-256 encryption** for communication between the lock, smartphone and accessories. Danalock also documents secure communication and protection of digital keys as part of the system architecture.
Another important detail is that the electronics are installed on the inside of the door.
From outside, the door retains a conventional mechanical cylinder and can still be opened with a physical key.
This means that a dead battery or a failed smartphone does not automatically leave you locked out of your own home.
Personally, I prefer this approach considerably to systems where access to the property depends entirely on an electronic device mounted on the outside of the door.
# # An app that concentrates on useful features
The Danalock app provides the functions you would realistically expect from a smart lock, including:
* Locking and unlocking
* Automatic unlocking when you arrive home
* Automatic locking
* Sharing digital keys with other users
* Permanent, temporary or recurring access permissions
* Battery monitoring
* Access history
* Lock configuration and calibration
For example, a cleaner can be given access only on Mondays and Thursdays during specified hours, while family members can have permanent access.
This type of access control also makes Danalock particularly interesting for **holiday homes, rental properties, offices and service personnel**.
With the optional Danapad, the door can also be opened using a PIN code.
With Danabridge, Bluetooth versions of the lock can be accessed remotely over the internet.
# # Smart Home integration
Danalock is also not tied to just one Smart Home ecosystem.
Depending on the model, versions are available supporting technologies including:
**Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Apple HomeKit.**
Danalock can therefore be incorporated into a much wider home automation system rather than functioning simply as an isolated gadget.
That is particularly important to me.
A genuinely smart lock should be capable of becoming part of the wider automation of the property.
When the front door is locked, for example, the alarm, lighting, heating, air conditioning or other systems could react accordingly.
That is when a smart lock starts becoming genuinely smart.
# # Used in professional security environments
There are also some interesting professional references behind Danalock.
Securitas has officially supported and tested Danalock V3 for use with some of its security solutions.
Another particularly interesting example comes from Norway.
**Forsvarsbygg**, which manages buildings, accommodation and facilities for the Norwegian Armed Forces, has used Danalock technology as part of its digital key and access-management solution.
Danalock has previously described the project as involving the replacement of thousands of conventional locks with smart locks.
That does not mean that every Danalock installation should suddenly be described as “military approved”.
But it certainly demonstrates that the technology has also been selected for environments where reliable access management matters.
# # It is not completely without disadvantages
No serious review should pretend that a product has absolutely no weaknesses.
For Danalock, I see three main considerations.
# # # 1. The basic lock may not be the complete solution
If you want PIN-code access, you need the optional Danapad.
If you want remote access over Wi-Fi when using the Bluetooth version, you need Danabridge or a compatible Smart Home integration.
# # # 2. Cylinder compatibility needs to be checked
Danalock works with many types of locks and cylinders, but that does not mean it can simply be fitted directly to every existing door.
In some installations, replacing the cylinder will be necessary.
# # # 3. Auto Unlock partly depends on your phone
Automatic unlocking uses technologies including Bluetooth, GPS and geofencing.
The power-saving settings and operating system on your smartphone can therefore influence how reliably this particular convenience feature works.
I would not, however, use Auto Unlock performance as the primary measure of the mechanical reliability of the lock itself.
None of these points changes my overall assessment.
# # Six months later
I did not install Danalock because I wanted another smart gadget.
I installed it because I wanted an electronic lock I could actually trust.
After approximately six months of daily use, I have experienced:
**0 failed locking attempts
0 failed unlocking attempts
0 operational problems
98% battery remaining**
That is difficult to argue with.
I have previously been somewhat sceptical about electronic locks on main entrance doors because convenience should never come at the expense of reliability or physical security.
So far, Danalock V3 has changed my view.
It is compact, discreet, powerful enough for a proper security door, flexible in terms of access control and Smart Home integration — and, most importantly:
**I no longer think about whether the lock is going to work. It simply works.**

After almost six months of testing, Danalock V3 is the first retrofit electronic lock I would install on my own front door again without hesitation.
And for me, that is probably the strongest recommendation I can give.
