♻️ Yesterday was Global Recycling Day, and we believe you do your best to recycle so we won’t talk about that.

Instead, we ask: is it enough to just focus on individual consumption? We’re globally dealing with so much plastic waste that it’s in everything we eat and leaves traces in our brains, the ocean, and even the top of Mount Everest.

Who benefits from this? 💰

To find answers, we’ve dug up some articles and reflections from experts like Beth Gardiner and took inspiration from activists such as Diane Wilson or NGO ClientEarth.

Our conclusion is that it’s high time we talked about plastic production and held the main players and lobbyists to account.

Swipe through our explainer to find out why plastic is everywhere, and stay for a quick reflection.

AI is often presented as neutral and inevitable. We believe it’s neither.

It’s built by people, trained on people, and impacts people, and that’s exactly why it deserves closer attention.

In Part 1, we looked at where AI comes from. In Part 2, we explored its environmental cost. In this final chapter of our series, we turn to how AI doesn’t just change how we work or what we build. It re-shapes how we think, trust information, relate to machines, and each other.

In our newest piece, we explore:

🧠 How relying on AI tools may affect our cognitive engagement
🤝 Why humans tend to overtrust automated systems
👀 The invisible human labor behind “automated” AI
⚖️ What ethical AI really means.

🌍 Will AI save the planet? Swipe through to explore the full picture 👉

In Part 2 of our series, we explore how this technology is being used to tackle climate challenges and the environmental contradictions that come with it.

From predicting floods and heatwaves to tracking deforestation and supporting endangered species, AI is contributing to climate and conservation efforts. 🌱

🌵 But it’s not all rosy… or green. Training today’s large AI models consumes huge amounts of electricity, strains local grids, and puts pressure on land and water resources — often affecting the communities living nearby.

In this piece, we also share some of the internal questions we ask ourselves at Vizzuality as we decide when and how AI makes sense for the people and ecosystems we serve.

1.5°C is not a target, it's a threshold. Already, the chain reaction of catastrophes 1.4°C human-induced global warming has caused needs to be more than a wake-up call; it's a scream for change. ⁣

A change to the systems locking us into an uninhabitable future. ⁣

For people working in this space, it's hard to hear this news time and time again - from the science warning us of these impacts, to the reality once they're felt. The storms, droughts, and wildfires that are destroying homes, habitats, and livelihoods, driven by critical tipping points, which political and corporate leaders have the privilege of dismissing. The rest of the world does not. ⁣

These tipping points are far more than a scientific analysis of our earth; they are human and non-human rights issues. This affects all of us. Every 0.1°C is more threatening and a consequence of the system we live in, of the decisions to prioritise fossil fuels, resource extraction, profit, and militarisation on a global scale. A result of countries in the Global North overshooting their fair share of emissions and natural resources for a long time. ⁣

We urgently need to scale up climate mitigation and resilience financing, especially for those most impacted and least responsible, primarily in the Global South. ⁣

Not in 10 years.⁣
Not in 5. ⁣
Now.⁣

📣 New webinar! How can we transform nature and carbon accounting in agricultural supply chains using free, open data?

The science and business team behind LandGriffon will engage in conversation to cover:

🌿 Why our recent open data release is essential for tackling the climate and nature crises from a collective, sector-wide approach

🌿 How our open-source software, LandGriffon, embeds the SBTN framework directly into our methodology

🌿 How to put SBTN and TNFD nature accounting into practice

As the business community rise to the challenge of combating the climate and nature crisis, they must be equipped with science-backed tools that enable action. More than just technology, the way to enable sector-wide, lasting change is through openness.

🗝️ Open knowledge. Open data. Open source.

Join our webinar to hear from Maria Ricart Ballara, Elena Palao Martínez Francis Gassert, and Michael Harfoot on what this looks like in practice.

We’re celebrating World Wildlife Day with a selection of our favourite camera trap photos from across the world, all thanks to 📸

We worked with , , , , , , WWF, and Map of Life to build this platform. It’s been pivotal in capturing the power of AI for wildlife conservation.

Wildlife Insights streamlines decision-making by providing machine learning models and other tools to manage, analyze and share camera trap data.

Which animals can you identify? There’s a couple of special ones… Let us know in the comments!

Happy Holidays! ✨

To celebrate, we decided to explore a seasons staple; the humble cookie. Click the link to view the journey of it’s core ingredients! 🍪

We believe supply chains are a force for good. They enable us to clothe and feed the world. Now it is time to turn their environmental costs into opportunities; deforestation free, net-positive, biodiversity rich… These are more than buzzwords, we need to make them a reality.

Step one is to know what is happening and where, by mapping your supply chain.

Easier said than done, we know.

That is why we have designed LandGriffon to work for all. No matter your level of sourcing data we work with you to map what you can, and fill the gaps using our unique spatial sourcing model.

Is it radical to believe that human beings are compassionate? That we will create a better world?

We don’t think so.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. As the last few days of COP27 close in, it’s time to show the world that that will is undeniable.

In this blog, Jacinta Hamley shares 10 examples of how we have transformed our world.

Data is a powerful tool. It can be used to drive the urgent action we need on climate, environmental and social issues. But the information data provides is only one piece of the puzzle. Quality data is only as valuable as its usability. That's why we take so much care around design and visualisation. We look forward to our co-founder, Sergio Estella, sharing this story at DataFest Tbilisi next week!

🚀 Meet Sergio Estella, an arts & design professional and a successful entrepreneur. Sergio co-founded Vizzuality, a leading European data visualization company with international impact. Vizzuality is a rare company producing digital products focused on social and environmental impact. The design sits at its very core.

Sergio’s passion for nature, technology, and humanity was the perfect complement to focus on beauty and function in design. It has led to products that detect forest loss, track supply chains, map illegal fishing, and advocate for a fair and open internet using data.

He has collaborated with a huge number of top organizations such as the UN, the World Resources Institute, WB, NASA, ESA, Cambridge University, Stanford, Yale, Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Mars.
