"People don’t buy welding machines; they buy welds. The welds are where their profit is," Rapid Welding co-founder Roy Edwards says.

For Roy, welding’s importance is visible everywhere - in the structures around us and the industries that keep society moving.

Having worked with Kemppi since the company opened in 1990, Roy reflects on five decades in the trade, equipment that keeps working after 25 years, and the future of welding as cobots, laser welding and AI reshape the industry.

How do you make a complex welded structure easier, faster and more accurate to automate?

Wärtsilä explored this through five prototype structures in the AITOOLS1 project. Using a mock-up inspired by engine baseframes, they tested different welding positions, assembly inaccuracies and welding sequences.

The iterations led to concrete design changes: improved robot access, redesigned weld terminations to reduce stress concentrations, positioning pins for faster and more accurate assembly, and bevelled end plates to improve tack-weld quality. Several changes could be made through laser cutting, delivering significant savings in assembly time and cost.

The AITOOLS1 project showed how much robotic weld quality is determined before the robot reaches the cell.

Some welds are hard to reach. Not for the SuperSnake GTX.

Large structures and complex assemblies can place the joint well beyond the reach of a standard MIG/MAG welding gun. SuperSnake GTX provides a combined wire-feeding distance of up to 30 metres, allowing the heavier equipment to stay put while the welder gets closer to the work.

Compatible with X5 FastMig and Master M systems, SuperSnake GTX is available with 10, 15, 20 or 25-metre cable packages in gas- and water-cooled configurations. Welders can also adjust key parameters directly from the subfeeder.

SuperSnake is already at work at Outotec Turula, supporting EN ISO 3834 welding quality.

Less equipment moving. Fewer interruptions.

Rauma Shipyard supports one of Finland’s most demanding shipbuilding projects: four Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvettes for the Finnish Navy.

To ensure they are built to last, RMC combines mechanised production, robotic welding solutions such as the Kemppi AX welding cell, and manual welding using systems like the Kemppi X5,

The case shows how robotic welding and manual MIG/MAG welding with Kemppi AX MIG Welder and X5 FastMig come together to support repeatable quality, productivity, and flexibility in naval manufacturing.

In just 71 seconds, the Master M 358 joined the cobot team. No onboarding week, no awkward introductions, just a fast changeover and straight to work.

In our timed test, the switch meant changing the manual welding torch to a Flexlite GXe-C cobot torch, connecting the Master M 358 to the cobot through Kemppi’s Digital Connectivity Module, and handing control over to the automated setup.

This flexibility allows workshops to use the same power source for hands-on, variable jobs and repeatable automated production, keeping equipment productive as workloads change.

One power source. Two job titles. One remarkably quick career move.

Move over, Iron Man. This humanoid is learning how the suit gets made. 🤖
Arska, Probot's humanoid robot, stopped by Kemppi HQ and tried its hand at welding.

It inspected the setup, got to grips with the torch and approached its first lesson with machine-like focus. The verdict: undivided attention with welding skills currently loading.

Thanks to the Probot team for bringing their metallic team member to the Kemppi HQ. As for the future of robots, world domination has to wait; Arska has welding training to finish.
