EDIT AGAIN - Always trust your first instincts! It IS a bug within Office version 16.101. The OpenAndSave subroutine keeps hanging. To fix I’ve had to revert to version 16.100 which was released it mid August and switch off Automatic Updates.
EDIT - In the spirit of full disclosure and as much as I’d love to stick it to Microsoft, I’ve just updated the offending system to macOS Sequoia 15.7.1 and all behaviour is back as expected.
If Word won’t save, make sure your macOS is as up to date as possible. Not saying you should go as far as Tahoe 26.0.1 but Sequoia 15.7.1 should be good.
BACKUP LOCALLY FIRST!!
Major glitch discovered with the latest release of Microsoft Word version 16.101.2 (25092825). If you need to check which version you're running, go to the Word menu on the menubar at the top of the screen and select About Word.
We’ve spent the best part of today working with a client who is a best selling author and who uses Microsoft Word to work on his manuscript.
His installation of the application Auto-Updated itself to version 16.101.2 on the 1st of October last.
However, it won’t save any documents. It APPEARS to save them as after the Save instruction is executed or selected no errors are forthcoming but the file is not saved, no changes are written to disk.
Coincidentally, Microsoft appear to have disabled all methods of contact, Live Chat is inactive, Support call centres are non responsive so there is no help available.
If you have an Office 365 subscription and have been working on an important document, before quitting from the application Word, switch to the Finder, navigate to where your document SHOULD be saved and use the Finder’s ‘Quick Look’ function to make sure the changes have been preserved.
We have discovered a work-around but do remember Word’s Auto-Save function is also inoperable.
Open your Word document, go to the Edit menu and choose ‘Select All (cmd-a)’.
Copy the selected text, go to the Edit menu and choose ‘Copy (cmd-c)’.
Open Pages, Apple’s free Office Automation app. Create a new, blank document.
Paste in the contents of the clipboard, go to the Edit menu and choose ‘Paste (cmd-v)’.
Go to the File menu and select Export>Word and save the document to you preferred storage location.
Oh, and as an aside, FFS Microsoft, get your 5**t in order!
