DÉBALLAGE DAY AT PUCES DU CANAL

I’m back from two days in Lyon for a project I’m developing with Steph . It’s fascinating how a simple encounter can turn into a collaboration that improves both our lives. Not revealing anything yet, but it’s coming very soon.

Today was the professional unpacking day at Les Puces du Canal - Lyon Villeurbanne . It’s a place that mixes a great number of shops, containers and permanent brocante stalls, open Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. But on a day like this, extra vendors come to unpack, and the place takes on a whole different scale, with far more treasures to find. Unfortunately I got there a bit too early, not quite sharp-eyed enough yet for nice photos. So today I’m sharing photos taken in May 2014, when I met Stephan !!!

If you’re in the Lyon area, this is a must-visit.

Here is book 5: Ephemera Collection Book B.

This second volume lingers on the intimate: identity papers, ferrotypes, those portraits captured on metal plates so popular throughout the 19th century, staged studio photos, and a selection of cabinet cards, elegant portraits mounted on thick cardboard that once adorned bourgeois interiors.
A book that gives a face to this period, literally. The portrait as a historical document and as a graphic object in its own right.

LA RENTRÉE

Tomorrow is a special day in France. We have a word just for it: la rentrée, the day school starts again after the long July and August break. After two months with no school at all, it truly is a total shift, back to routine, back to daily habits.

My daughter is grown now, so it doesn’t touch my life directly anymore. But like every important date on the calendar, there is still a little nostalgia for the end of summer. That said, I won’t complain if temperatures drop a bit.

This made me want to share a glimpse of what daily life looked like for students of the past: school writing ink, one of my personal collections that keeps growing, especially thanks to a set I bought back a few weeks ago. I’ll have the pleasure of sharing it properly in one of my upcoming books, if we make it to the end of the Kickstarter funding. If you haven’t seen it yet, check my profile to see where we stand.

And my own rentrée is coming too, at the end of this week, when the big markets start back up.

THE CALM BEFORE THE MARATHON

Sunday at home means a bit of reorganizing the collection. I’m staying quietly put today, because next week the big professional déballages start back up again, a bit like gathering strength before a marathon. It was time to add the latest little black and white finds to their dedicated corner.

These little pharmacy pots fascinate me. Most date from the late 19th and early 20th century, a time when each pharmacy had its own pottery made by specialized manufacturers, in England especially around Staffordshire for fine earthenware and transferware. The pharmacist’s name, his town, sometimes even the remedy he sold were printed directly on the pot, a way of signing his business and building customer loyalty long before paper labels existed.

They blend perfectly with my mustard pots from the same era and all this lovely earthenware, a collection that tells the story of an entire century through everyday household objects.

It’s always a joy when I find one. I know many of you will ask if they’re for sale, but these ones stay with me for now.

Here is book 2: The Monograms Collection.
A monogram is a motif made by combining two or more letters into one symbol. It all started with a French catalog I found at a flea market, a gem I wanted to bring back to life. The result: over 1200 monograms gathered across 112 pages, a dizzying panorama of what a letter can become once it turns into ornament.

Canvas cover, hot foil black printing. A book designed as much as an inspiration tool as a collector’s item, for anyone working with letters, logos, visual identity.
