In the presence of
« Last spring in Paris, Dutch illustrator Joost Stokhof rediscovered why he started drawing in the first place. Over five days, he filled 22 sheets of paper with drawings: the small, quiet details of the city most people walk straight past. The unposed moments, the traces of interaction, the feeling of a place rather than its landmarks. Without any plans for what to do with them, the work kept coming.
Each sheet held multiple drawings, made quickly, one next to the other. Back in Holland, he collaborated with Riso publisher TOSAM Press to turn these observations into a beautiful edition in which each small moment was granted its own page, a pocket-sized collection printed in three-color Riso. The book is called Ask for Directions to Get Lost, both a nod to how these days in Paris unfolded and an invitation to the reader to approach the city, or any city, the same way. Booker-nominated author Ali Smith wrote the foreword, placing these drawings within Paris’s long history as a city that pulls artists toward it. »
