Bull of Falaris"
Thanks to Lucian, the 2nd century AD satirist, we know quite a bit about the torture machine known as "the brass bull of Perilaus" or "the bull of Phalaris".
The sculptor Perilaos between 570-560 BC.
he made to the order of the tyrant Phalaris, a brass bull that could fit an entire man inside. When they lit a fire under the bull, the one inside was roasted alive and his voices were heard, through a special mechanism, like the bellowing of the bull.
When he first presented his invention to the tyrant of Acragantas of Sicily, he ordered Perilaus to be put inside the bull and made his first victim.
It was a fitting end for the inventor of such a diabolical machine.

This giant sequoia tree was estimated to be over 2600 years old when it was cut down in the 1890s.

(🤖) Construite en 1478, cette maison, âgée de 545 ans, est la plus ancienne de France ! 🏠

Elle se trouve au n°10 de la rue de Belvezet, à l'angle du Passage de l'Hospice, à Sévérac-le-Château.

Surnommée La Maison de Jeanne en référence à son dernier occupant, cette demeure se distingue par sa construction en hauteur le long d'une ruelle en pente.

Elle présente les caractéristiques architecturales typiques du haut Moyen Âge, notamment ses murs en colombages.

Les fenêtres de petite taille, les étages en encorbellement et les vieilles pierres confèrent à cette maison son caractère unique.

À l'origine construite en pierre meulière, sa façade a été rénovée en septembre 2018 pour préserver sa structure fragile qui menaçait de s'effondrer.

Depuis les années 1970, cette demeure est inoccupée, mais elle est désormais propriété de la mairie de Sévérac et est devenue une attraction touristique.

En été, la Maison de Jeanne propose des animations médiévales et ouvre ses portes au grand public.

(*)Helene Schjerfbeck was a modernist painter, she is known for her realist works and self-portraits, and also for her landscapes and still lifes. Schjerbeck's birthday, July 10, is Finland's national day for the painted arts.

Throughout her long life, her work changed dramatically beginning with French-influenced realism and plein air painting. It gradually evolved towards portraits and still life paintings.
At the beginning of her career she often produced historical paintings, such as the Wounded Warrior in the Snow (1880), At the Door of Linköping Jail in 1600 (1882) and The Death of Wilhelm von Schwerin (1886).
Historical paintings were usually the realm of male painters, as was the experimentation with modern influences and French radical naturalism. As a result, her works produced mostly in the 1880s did not receive a favourable reception until later in her life.

"Her work starts with a dazzlingly skilled, somewhat melancholic version of late-19th-century academic realism…it ends with distilled, nearly abstract images in which pure paint and cryptic description are held in perfect balance". (Roberta Smith, New York Times, November 27, 1992)

Schjerbeck's birthday, July 10, is Finland's national day for the painted arts.
