I’ve wanted Matt Burns on WiseNoise since I first started planning the podcast —and he didn’t disappoint. 👇

I’ve known Matt since the very start of his Scottish journey, back when he answered a Gumtree ad (It was the LinkedIn of its day) of mine, not long after arriving from Australia and met me for a chat about potential work at the dearly departed Velvet Elvis in Partick.

Even then, you could tell the guy had something about him. His portfolio was full of inventive ideas, expertly crafted to life.

And I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching him ‘winging it’ and turn that into Thirst — from cold-emailing 44 Scottish breweries to build his first clients, to building a globally recognised beverage design agency and redesigning iconic brands like Bruichladdich Distillery Company.

Matt brings the gold throughout and absolutely delivers the ultimate recipe to go from freelancer to global branding agency at the start of our chat.

Had a sgoinneil weekend last month at HebCelt Festival - Lovely to be back on the island and seeing so many folk lap up a gloriously sunny time in Stornoway.

It was made even more special by seeing the Festival Identity we’d been working on over the past year come to life.

After 2025’s richer, illustrative look, we went back to the fundamentals with the festival team. The result? A simpler, bolder identity built on flat iconography, finished with a multi-coloured gradient pulled straight from the Hebridean twilight.

From wristbands and pint cups to brochures, posters, social content and merch, every touchpoint stayed recognisable from screen to print to product.

Huge thanks to Carol Ferguson, Iain Macphail and the rest of the festival team for another year of this brilliant project.

Helping tell the story of one of Scotland’s most-loved festivals in a place this special never gets old.

I’m doing my live speaking thing again.

Also a change of gear and a bit more of a high wire act as I won’t have a Keynote slides with me. I’ll need to go heavy with the ‘painting pictures with words’ vibe as I tell tall tales from my the uneven career path in Graphic Design.
