I’ve been a designer since before the first website was introduced to the world, and I’ve worked on countless since. Yup.

DIY websites are a life saver for the cost conscious, entrepreneurial, business owner.

But when a new client comes to me to fix or improve a website, I can almost guarantee I’ll see one if not all of these five blunders.

We all learn from mistakes, and none are dramatic.

But each can cost you new business.

Use this to fheck your own site, and if you spotted something that needs fixing, let me know. I’m happy to help.

This website was built nearly ten years ago and had never been properly looked after.

No maintenance. No updates. No one watching it.

I didn’t build it and I didn’t design it.

I inherited it and, when I looked under the bonnet, it wasn’t in a good place. Outdated PHP, an unsupported setup, and a real security risk.

The client had no idea (most people don’t).

It’s now fully migrated to the JR Digital server.

✔️ Stable, secure, and safe.

A design refresh is next, but that’s up to the client and can wait. The important thing is sorted.

If your website was built a few years ago and hasn’t had much attention since, it’s worth a look.

The problems are rarely visible until they aren’t.

If you’ve been writing blog content but not seeing Google traction, the issue usually isn’t the content itself.

Most people update an old post and republish it, but leave the original date unchanged. Google reads that as old content, regardless of what’s on the page now. One small step, completely overlooked.

Are you handling client bookings manually? WhatsApp? Instagram DM’s?

It doesn’t need to be that way.

It is possible to build a simple landing page, optimised for local SEO so people can find your business, with a built-in booking system that works without you having to respond to every single DM.

This is your sign your website needs a Spring clean 🫧

A website that worked really well even one year ago might not reflect the business now.

Things might have changed, whether it’s your goals, offers, or audience.

But has your website changed to reflect that?

Your website is often the first place someone checks you out.

If it’s unclear, outdated, or hard to use, people don’t hang around trying to figure it out then they will just leave.

You don’t need to do a full redesign, but do look at it and ask:

🤔 Is it easy to navigate?
🤔 Is it clear what you do and who it’s for?
🤔 Does it work properly on mobile?
🤔 Is it actually helping people take the next step?

If the answer to any of those is no, it’s time for a Spring clean!

A genuine question for business owners. When did you last update your website?

This year? Last year? Or… you’re not sure?

I ask because many websites are built with good intentions, but then slowly fall by the wayside.

Plugins go out of date.

Content ages and becomes irrelevant or is not indexed.

Forms stop working.

Before JR Digital, before websites, I studied at Glasgow School of Art and it was nice to pick up a brush again instead of a mouse for a few hours.

Most people build a website to help their business grow. But somewhere along the way, it often turns into something else...

A box to tick. A link to send. A page that exists but doesn’t do anything for your business.

So, what did you expect it to do for your business, and what does it actually do now?

I love seeing the websites I’ve designed in all their glory. These are just some of the brands I’ve built websites for over the past few months🤩

As you can see, the businesses I work with are varied, from startups to established companies that have outgrown the site they started with.

No two projects look the same. Some days I’m helping a founder launch something brand new. Other days I’m untangling a website that’s been templated or tweaked so many times it no longer reflects the business behind it.

I’ve worked with wedding brands, wellness businesses, educators, platforms, and service-based founders who all treat their website as something their business relies on to be found, trusted, and contacted.

I love building sites that don’t just look good, but work properly, load fast, and support real business growth.
