Printer Profiling: How it fits into your workflow

The printing process, printer, colour, and, above all, paper all have a huge influence on how a file looks when printed. The same file looks completely different on glossy paper than it does on a matt, grained canvas.

You must enable your image processing programme to simulate the next processing step, that is, printing. To make this possible, the specific properties of the combination of printer, colour and printing material must be known. These properties are saved in an ICC profile and enable the image processing software to simulate the printout's effect in the soft proofing view.

This International Dog Day, we wanted to share our interview with Diana Mehner, professional dog photographer:

Dogs are exciting models for photographers – but not so easy to photograph. Diana offers tips for taking great photos of our four-legged friends.

"Patience is crucial. Dogs don’t work like people. They are what they are. You can only make the best of it. It’s also important that you don’t care what outsiders think of you during the shoot."

4K Monitors: High definition and large screen sizes.

Against a backdrop of increasingly high-definition displays on smartphones and tablets, and other such developments, full HD displays on PCs are becoming less and less attractive. At the same time, interest is increasing in large screens and multi-screen environments that allow larger workspaces to increase the efficiency of multitasking, which is essential for PCs.

This is where 4K monitors come in: high-end displays for a new age that meet the two needs of high-definition and a large workspace with top-level specs.

Blueprint Studios is the podcast and video production studio hosted within the Blueprint Partners office in Fulham, London.

As the needs of their partners evolved Blueprint Partners Senior Leadership, decided that they needed to bring some of their content production and post-production in-house.

Rhys Kirkham, Blueprint Partners CEO, explains "After talking to the EIZO team, we realised that a combination of the ColorEdge and FlexScan range would answer all our needs. Choosing a single provider with a unified warranty period, provided us with the confidence that should there be any problems we would be covered."

Clive Booth: The instinctive nature of photography

Cameras can freeze time in thousands of a second, but the action of getting ready to be in the right place at the right time, with the camera set exactly right and then pressing the button, takes years of practice to be able to do it consistently. Young and inexperienced photographers may be able to do it sometimes, but the experts will be able to do it again and again, because they will have developed that instinctive nature. The instinctive nature of photography is one element alongside the technical requirement of using the camera, but Clive’s ability to observe, emphasise and engage with his subjects really stands out to me.

In this article, Clive outlines an experience when shooting the famous British actor Terence Stamp. Read the story:

With a good colour management system in place, you can be confident that you’re making the correct edits and your prints or videos always look good. It cuts down on back-and-forth revisions (including multiple test prints), avoids unpleasant surprises at the final stage and gives you more control over how your work is seen.

Your computer monitor is at the heart of all this. It’s your reference point, and if it’s not accurate, nothing else will be either.

But a great monitor is only as good as its calibration. Over time, all monitors drift, which means colours shift slightly, brightness levels change, and what once was accurate slowly becomes less so. Because these changes happen gradually, we don’t tend to see them. That’s why calibration isn’t a one-off job. It should be part of your regular routine, ideally once a week when the monitor is new, then monthly after it stabilises.

Many people working from home use small laptop screens that offer neither the size nor the ergonomic adjustment options that you would naturally expect from a modern and healthy computer workstation in a company.

A makeshift solution may be enough once in a while as an exception, but when these exceptions become longer-term or even full-time alternatives to working at the company office, a makeshift solution is not enough.

That’s why we have compiled the most important tips and recommendations to help you select suitable monitors for your workstation at home and explain the key technical features.

This International Cat Day, we wanted to highlight Tim Flach's recent work.

For Tim, photographing cats isn’t just about capturing animals; it’s about decoding a mirror we hold up to ourselves. “What is it that we like about them?” he muses. “Cats do what they want to do. Maybe that’s something many of us find more appealing than a dog waiting to be fed or taken for walkies.”

Cats, unlike their canine counterparts, possess a quiet autonomy – an evolutionary aloofness that intrigues and divides. But Tim isn’t looking to take sides in the age-old cat-versus-dog debate. Rather, he sees felines as a rich lens through which to explore our own impulses, affections, and the very psychology of attachment.
