The Met Office is expecting temperatures to reach the mid-20s in Scotland, perhaps locally high 20s for today through to Friday, peaking on Thursday when the low 30s is possible across southern Scotland.

A combination of heat, high humidity and high overnight minimum temperatures may result in adverse health effects, resulting in increased strain on health services.

In addition, with more people likely to visit our coastal areas, rivers and lochs there will be an increased risk of water safety incidents.

During this hot weather it’s tempting to head to rivers, lochs or the sea to cool off. While water can be refreshing, it can also be dangerous. Please take a moment to think about your safety and the safety of those around you:

🔍 Step One: Stop and think – spot the dangers - before going near or entering the water, ask yourself:

❄️ Cold water shock can happen even on warm days
⚠️ Check for safety signs and warnings
🍺 Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
🌊 Water depth can be deceptive – beware of hidden ledges, currents, and objects
🚤 Stay aware of boats and other water users
🚪 Make sure you have a safe way to get out before entering
🌬️ At the coast, watch for rip currents, tides, and wind

👨‍👩‍👧 Step Two: Stay together – stay close

Always go with a friend or family member - if you get into trouble in the water:

🛟 Float to live – lean back, extend arms and legs
🧘 Stay calm and control your breathing
📣 Then call for help or swim to safety

🚨 Step Three: In an emergency call 999

❌ Never enter the water to try and rescue someone
🛟 Use a throw line or life ring if available
📞 Call 999 immediately and wait for emergency services

Enjoy the sunshine, but stay safe, look out for one another and respect the water

The Crown Estates Coastal Communities Fund for the Banff and Buchan area has opened for a second tranche.

Deadline for applications is 5pm on Wednesday, June 24 and groups will be informed of decisions by July 15.

✅Improve access to coastal areas. For example, paths and viewpoints

✅Improve the coastal environment. For example, applications to establish and support community groups looking after their coastline

Visitors are being warmly invited to experience the very best of Aberdeenshire this summer, from its dramatic coastline and golden beaches to its rolling countryside, charming towns and attractions.

With longer days and unforgettable scenery, the region remains one of Scotland’s top destinations, offering something for everyone, whether it’s coastal walks, castle trails, wildlife spotting or simply relaxing in one of the many welcoming communities.

At the same time, Aberdeenshire Council and its partners are encouraging everyone to continue the overwhelmingly positive trend of responsible tourism, while reminding visitors that a small minority of behaviours continue to have a significant impact on local communities and the environment.
