🎥 An exciting session with The Boys’ Brigade NI! 🤟

I recently had the pleasure of taking part in a filming session with The Boys’ Brigade NI, where I introduced the boys to British Sign Language (BSL) — including the alphabet and a verse.

These clips will be shared with Boys’ Brigade groups across the country, giving young people the opportunity to learn some basic signs and discover more about Deaf communication. 🙌

But I’d love to take it one step further…

It would be fantastic to be invited along to some of the groups so the boys can put the signs they’ve learned into practice with a Deaf person. What better way to build confidence, encourage communication and bring their learning to life?

A huge well done to The Boys’ Brigade NI for this fantastic initiative, and a special thank you to Lisa Keys for being the driving force behind the idea. 💙

I’m really looking forward to seeing how this initiative helps create more opportunities for Deaf awareness, inclusion and communication across the BB.

I spent a productive morning with the Principal, teachers and classroom assistants at Portrush Primary School, delivering a session on “Supporting Deaf Children in Education.”

We explored:

- The diversity of deafness
- Technology and communication
- The importance of inclusive practice and reasonable adjustments
- Some useful, everyday BSL signs

We may even have played a fun game or two! 😀

Everyone engaged in thoughtful and meaningful discussions around 6 different scenarios that a deaf child may encounter during school life, exploring potential challenges and practical solutions to support inclusion and accessibility. We also learnt some useful every day signs in BSL.

A huge well done to everyone for their enthusiasm, participation and willingness to learn!

I’m absolutely loving the mix of booking requests coming in — every week brings something new and exciting!

I’ll soon be delivering Deaf Inclusion sessions at Ulster University and will be also supporting primary school teacher training, helping teaching staff build confidence in Deaf‑inclusive education for our deaf children.

I’m also creating bespoke BSL courses for Year 8s and Year 13/14 across grammar and secondary schools — shaping the next generation of inclusive communicators.

Looking forwards to the next 6 week courses starting soon in Limavady and Portstewart.

The variety keeps growing! I’ve received a brilliant request from the University of the 3rd Age (U3A) for a 6‑week BSL course starting next month in Belfast.

And new bookings have arrived from the Boys’ Brigade and Girl Guides, who are keen to bring Deaf awareness and signing skills into their groups.

To think I launched Deaf Insights just 11 months ago… I’m genuinely grateful for every opportunity.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, booked, shared, and championed this work. I’m absolutely loving it — and excited for all the fun, meaningful sessions ahead!
