Running my Etsy shops used to look very different. Here’s then vs. now.

Then: I knew I wanted a side hustle, so I spent an hour a day researching one that would actually work. Once I had the idea, I had to work out how to make posters, so more research. Then I started designing and told myself I’d worry about the rest later. By the time I had 500 posters, I had to figure out how to build the shop on my own, and there was no course to follow. On top of that came uploading every listing by hand at 10-15 minutes each, plus adding tracking to every order.

The best decision I made with my first Etsy shop was opening it before it was ready.

I started with a few hundred listings. It wasn’t finished, it wasn’t polished, and most people would have waited until it felt perfect. But a shop that’s still being built can make sales, and one that’s waiting to be perfect can’t.

The first stretch was quiet. I kept adding listings anyway, about an hour a day. By month 3 I had 500 listings live and sales every few days. By month 6 I’d passed 1,000 listings, with multiple sales every day, and the shop had hit £20k in revenue. Last year, that one shop made over £30k in sales.

All of it came from an hour of work a day and a shop that was never “finished”, just open and growing. Real customers showed me which designs to make more of, so it got better the whole time.

I did the same thing twice more, and all three shops now bring in around £5k in revenue every month.

If you’re waiting for your idea to feel perfect, consider this permission to launch it half-finished. Open it, keep adding to it, and let the sales tell you what to do next.

If I was looking to start a side hustle right now I’d probably want 3 things 👀

1. Something I could do from home 🏠

Not something that requires me to go somewhere, set something up, or be anywhere specific. Just me, my laptop, wherever I happen to be 😌

2. Something that doesn’t cost a lot to start 💰

I’m not investing hundreds into something that might not work. The lower the upfront cost the better — ideally nothing at all

3. Something I could actually learn even with zero experience 🗣️

An Etsy poster shop ticks all three 😭

Something I made sitting on my sofa that didn’t exist in the real world at all

And now it’s here 🖼️ An actual physical poster. Delivered to my door. Something I can hold

And the best part?

I didn’t print it 🗣️
I didn’t package it 🗣️
I didn’t take it to a post office 🗣️

PrintShrimp took it from a file on a screen to a real thing in the real world and I wasn’t involved in any of it 😭

My favourite thing about my Etsy shop 👀

It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And I am very much not 😆

My listings are just out there constantly, waiting for someone to discover them 😌

While I’m at work🗣️
While I’m making dinner🗣️
While I’m asleep🗣️

They don’t need me there. They don’t need me to be doing anything. Just sitting on Etsy being findable whilst I’m completely elsewhere😭

And when someone buys one, PrintShrimp prints it, packs it, posts it. I find out about it after the fact, usually when I’m still doing whatever I was doing before💰

Passive🗣️Income🗣️Unlocked🗣️

There is something genuinely mad about waking up to a sale you weren’t there for, on a print you made weeks ago, that’s already on its way to a customer without you lifting a finger😅

A couple of years ago, I opened an Etsy shop purely to earn a bit of extra money. I never imagined it would end with me co-founding a company.

There was no business plan and no special skill behind it. I put some posters up, watched what sold, and kept adding to the catalogue. The sales came slowly at first, then they didn’t, and that first shop passed £20k in revenue within six months.

That result made the next step obvious. If it worked once, it could work again, so I opened two more shops in totally different niches. Today all three bring in around £5k a month between them, and they run quietly in the background.

The biggest change wasn’t the money, it was the freedom. I can work from anywhere, which means I’ve spent a lot of the last couple of years travelling instead of being tied to a desk.
