What do you get when you mix curiosity, a discarded v**e, and a passion for hacking? A fully functioning web server with just 24KB of storage!
Romanian engineer Bogdan Ionescu, aka BogdanTheGeek, has pulled off an internet oddity—transforming a disposable v**e pen into a web server that loads pages in just 160 milliseconds. The v**e’s tiny chip (a 24 MHz Arm Cortex M0+ with 3KB RAM) was never meant to do this… but Ionescu saw potential where most saw waste.
After some serious tinkering—replacing clunky code, optimizing memory use, and using an old-school SLIP modem protocol—he hosted a webpage from the v**e itself. It even ran his blog post about the hack, stored in just 20KB of flash!
The project wasn’t just for laughs. Ionescu used it to spotlight the hidden tech inside millions of v**es tossed every week. With microcontrollers, USB-C ports, and rechargeable batteries, these gadgets offer a second life far beyond their ni****ne shelf.
Though his “VapeServer” buckled under traffic with 503 errors, it worked—until too many curious geeks clicked in.
Now that’s recycling with a side of innovation.♻️💻
Source code? Yup, it’s all on GitHub.
