π· Β£8.3bn a year is spent by the NHS on wound care every year
π This makes wound care the third-highest area of NHS spend, after cancer and diabetes. Yet almost all existing research comes from healthcare settings, not social care, where a huge amount of wound care happens
π As we work to connect social care services, and align our direction with the vision of the NHS 10 Year Plan, it is vital we understand the reality of care in our communities
π£ So, we looked at our own data. Using anonymised records from over 26,000 people cared for on Nourish Better Care, we've built the first baseline for wound care in UK social care.
π‘ What we found:
24% of people in care homes have at least one wound
462 wounds per 1,000 people in care homes
Providers using their data well saw 75% of wounds resolved in under 4 weeks
