It's not usually the obvious scam emails that catch people out. It's the ones that look like they're from someone you already trust.

A message that seems to come from your MD, asking for something urgent. An invoice that looks exactly like the supplier's usual template. A password reset email at exactly the moment you're expecting one.

The common thread isn't bad spelling or dodgy links- it's urgency and familiarity. Slow down before you click, especially if something's asking you to act fast.

One of the simplest ways to catch a phishing email: check where the link goes before you click it.

Hover over it on desktop, or press and hold on mobile, and the real web address will show up. If it doesn't match what the email claims to be, that's your answer.

It sounds obvious, but it's one of the quickest ways to catch a scam before it catches you.
