Could you spot fake URLs in a legitimate looking email?

Fake links are becoming more sophisticated than ever.

They can look completely normal at first glance, with small changes designed to still feel familiar. The use of similar looking characters from the Cyrillic alphabet, or slight spelling mistakes, is on the rise as they can easily go unnoticed.

So, what can you do? Having a first line of defence in place can make a real difference. Tools like Sophos Email work quietly in the background, helping to filter out many suspicious emails before they ever reach your inbox, reducing the risk of clicking on a fake link in the first place.

A few weeks ago, we received a handwritten letter from a student at Treleigh School asking if we’d be able to donate a prize for their summer fayre raffle. They’re raising money to help run their minibus and hoping to fund a second one.

We always try to support our local community where we can, and this felt like such a lovely way to help. So, we picked out a few items we remember enjoying at their age and dropped them off this morning.

Gosia and Keira visited the school got the chance to meet the student who wrote the lovely letter, hand over the prizes, and give her a letter from the team.

It was such a nice way to spend the morning. It’s also been great to hear about the support they’ve already had from other local businesses, including St Eval, Macsalvors, Baker Tom's, Hall for Cornwall and Cornish Sea Salt.

We’re incredibly proud to share that we took home not one, but two awards at the Cornwall’s Rewind Radio Business Awards last Friday.

Jacob was named Cornwall’s Rising Star, sponsored by Truro and Penwith College, recognising emerging talent helping shape the future of Cornwall’s business landscape. Aztek was also named Employer of the Year, sponsored by Sekoya Specialist Employment Services, celebrating organisations that place people at the heart of what they do.

It was a brilliant evening at Tregenna Castle, with great food, entertainment and a room full of supportive people cheering on every nominee.

There’s a phishing campaign doing the rounds that doesn’t use email at all.

Instead, attackers are contacting people directly on LinkedIn with messages that look legitimate, such as job opportunities, business projects, or a “relevant” document to download.

The file appears harmless. But once it’s opened, malicious code can run quietly in the background, giving the attacker access to your device.

Tech tip: Treat links and attachments on LinkedIn and other social platforms the same way you treat unexpected emails. If you weren’t expecting it, don’t click it.

A UK water company has been fined nearly £1 million after a cyber attack exposed the personal data of over 633,000 people.

It all started with a single phishing email. From there, attackers were able to sit undetected in the network for almost two years before moving through systems and gaining full access. By the time they were detected, highly sensitive data, including personal details and bank information, had already been stolen and published on the dark web.

So what went wrong?
👉 Outdated systems
👉 Limited monitoring
👉 Unpatched vulnerabilities
👉 A lack of basic security controls

This is exactly why keeping systems updated and properly secured matters. That means moving away from outdated software, like upgrading to Windows 11, and training your team to spot a phishing email.
