The growth of China’s high-speed rail network is often touted as a perfect symbol of the country’s 21st-century transformation: In 2000, the network was non-existent; today, the country has more kilometers of high-speed lines than anywhere else, and Chinese engineering firms are building lines in Southeast Asia and Europe.

The U.S., meanwhile, still has no high-speed passenger rail system. In fact, if it weren’t for the U.S. government’s formation of Amtrak in 1971, passenger rail might well have disappeared entirely. But with several new lines in the works, plus Amtrak’s own modernization efforts in full swing, intercity U.S. transit might finally be getting back on track: https://okt.to/WSPD14

Solar power is cheap and clean - but it takes up a lot of space. One solution could be to move solar panels offshore.

Joe Renshaw tells us why offshore solar makes such sense, the current state of the industry and its (possible) glittering future.

Last year, almost half of the European Union’s gas supply came from imported LNG. When disruption in the Strait of Hormuz removed 19% of global LNG exports from the market in March this year, prices almost doubled.

Unsurprisingly, the higher prices have slowed restocking efforts. Now, Wood Mackenzie is predicting that Europe will head into autumn and winter with its lowest levels of stored gas in 15 years.

So how can the E.U. maintain energy security while reducing its exposure to global shocks?

Earlier this month, the largest wind farm in the western hemisphere reached full capacity in the high desert of central New Mexico. The installation can now send about 3 gigawatts of power on a 550-mile, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) line - the largest of its kind in the U.S.

HVDC is one potential answer to a question central to the energy transition: Given the best wind and solar resources tend to sit far from the cities that need them, how do you move that much electricity across a continent?

Nowhere is the potential of HVDC clearer than in China’s Gobi Desert, where the world’s longest and most powerful DC line already carries enough electricity to light 50 million homes.

On our we met with customers and partners to explore how is accelerating innovation.

Starting with an announcement of investment in our global headquarters and research and development centre in Cambridge, we visited Schneider Electric and heard from Gwenaelle Huet and Lisa Wee who spoke about how our partnership delivers impactful results.

We headed to Lausanne to hear from Prof. Julia Binder from IMD about digital ecosystems.

In Stuttgart we spoke with Florian Modlinger about our technology partnership with Porsche.

We ended our journey at in Milan where we heard from , sharing their perspectives on THE Industrial Intelligence event of the year.
